Binding Asemics 16
I feel VERY fortunate to have been involved in all 5 books and to have received asemic mailings from such talented IUOMA members. AND we have been supplied with wonderful introductions by De Villo. I don’t have all the contributions yet. So I will let those artists know – their space in my book is BLANK!!! Somehow the pages all wanted to be together – and apart – if that sounds reasonable???? I have chosen a complex binding (more than 2 bindings in one format) – accordion and 3-hole-pamphlet stitch – both are singularly VERY easy and when joined – well, the results are FAB!! O – and, this is by far my most favorite way of combining work truth be told. I have used a mockup to show the process as handling an 8.4 m book to photograph proved CHALLANGING to say the least. PLEASE NOTE! This is a SUGGESTION for binding – you may try a completely different approach – GREAT! Show us pics!!!
Image 1 Basic Accordion Structure
You will need to join papers together . I then wrote/stenciled asemics onto the whole length – back and front . For me this ties all the different works together to the format.
This diagram shows the structure of the folded format – to be repeated for as many valleys as you need – valleys being the ‘gutters’ where you will attach your asemic pages to the accordion book. If you take an ordinary piece of paper and fold it this way it will help you to visualize what you will be doing on a larger scale.
I used a 15cm width by a 21cm length size for each ‘page’ and then folded.
Into the first fold I sewed the title of the book (Compendium, Asemics 16 # 1 - # 3)
Three hole pamphlet stitch. Refer back to second image. You will need to make 3 equidistant holes through the valley and pages.
On the OUTSIDE of the valley come through hole (station) 1. On the inside go though station 2.
On the outside go all the way to station 3 and come through to the inside.
Go back though station 1 to the outside, firm up the thread and tie a knot.
Repeat for each asemic section.
I sewed into each valley – back and front of the book, interspacing each book with the introduction by De Villo and a list of participants.
This means that:
If you have ONE book, you will need 9 front valley folds – ie, one for the intro, eight folds for one half of the book, and you will then place the other 8 contributions in the ‘back’ valley folds.
TWO books : 16 + 16 = 32 plus 2 intros = 34 folds divided by 2 (front and back) = 17 valley folds.
THREE books: 16 sections X 3 = 48 folds + 3 intro’s = 51 folds (52) divided by 2 = 26 valley folds.
JEEPERS this was complicated to write and I bet even more complicated to do from these instructions – suggestion – make a mock up with a small piece of paper and all will become clear.
Any questions – let me know – and THANK YOU all again! I am going to also start a discussion for finished books – lets see them when done!!!

How did you connect each person's bound piece to the next for the accordion?
