I have finished my Birthday Aanalysis. the findings are below. Hope you are well. Regards, Val
I have been 'monitoring' those IUOMA members whose Birthdays have appeared on the 'Birthdays Today' part of this site. I started this, because I did not recognise many of their names, and wondered if they were indeed active members of IUOMA?
This led me to try and define what an 'Active Member' was, and to see how many of those whose birthdays were listed are indeed active.
I found that about 1 in 5 of them were active, and extrapolated from this that the Active Membership of IUOMA (based on the starting figure of 3263 Members on 22 December, 2013, was, at the end of the month's analysis, about 630.
The daily statistics for the month long period are below. (As are the methodological and statistical shortcomings, of which I am only too well aware.) Mark Twain wrote that there are 'Lies, damned lies, and statistics', and you can read whatever you like into my statistics (and lies!).
I draw the following conclusions from them:
i) about 20% of IUOMA's Members are 'Active' as I have defined it.
ii) the remaining 80% may or may not be active Mail Artists outside the IUOMA network
iii) at one time this 80% were active IUOMA Mail Artists --that's why they joined (but see vii) below!)
iv) it is not necessary to be in any network to be a Mail Artist (well, I suppose you have to have at least one other person in your network to send Mail Art too!)
v) within IUOMA, a small number of people are responsible for a large amount of activity. They are the 'Super Actives'.
vi) as to the rest of us, well, we have different levels of Mail Art activity. I see it a bit like a love affair: start enthusiastically and with great passion, but then what you do and how vigorously you do it sort of tails off over time, and eventually you just get to live with your Mail Art personage.
vii) many IUOMA Mail Artists have been and gone, and, I trust, are still Mail Arting. As Mail Art is supposed to be enjoyable, and it certainly is for me, I would like to dedicate this whole Blog to one of our number who you have probably never heard of, but whose approach to Mail Art somehow seems to encapsulate what it is all about: fun. This is Deletemeplease's profile:
She bcame a member of IUOMA, joined one Group, but never posted a message, photo, or blog, or joined a discussion, and has not been heard of or from since.
here's wishing you a fijne zondaag, and to help you along just a little bit, here's the Headline News from my Birthday Analysis.
(The Viewing figures are still going up, too).
Regards, Val

ONE MORE DAY TO GO: there's been a fall in the number of predicted IUOMA"s 'Active' membership to 632, or 19% of the total number of members. With just a single 'Birthday Day' to go, can the Active Membership receive a last minute birthday boost?
The Statistical Analysis suggests 'No', but, as Mark Twain said, there are 'Lies, damned lies, and statistics'. However, he didn't have anything to say about Mail Art and/or IUOMA
The FINAL & EXCITING EPISODE of this Nail-Biting Drama where EVERYTHING will be revealed will be broadcast about 06.30 (CET) tomorrow where EVERYTHING will be revealed!! DO NOT MISS IT!!!!
And an INTERPRETATION of the figures will be offered.
i Heleen! Here's an update on IUOMA membership. More info can be found on the Blog. Have a good weekend, Beste wensen, Val
Today's News: predicted 'Active' Membership shows a slight rise to 553 -- approximately 17% of the nominal IUOMA membership. And IUOMA 'activity' was at an all-time high last month, with the site visited 140,000 times. It seems that controversy (and boy did we have a lot of it!) leads to increased interest amongst IUOMA's (far too few) 'Active' members. Do all the ongoing sagas impact on new membership?, Probably not, as, on average, 2 new Mail Artists a day have joined IUOMA in the 3 weeks I have been conducting this analysis.
Wow!! Roamboatabobyelarse! Was that right?? I've never tasted them!! And I've never pronounced it correctly either, I suspect...but thanks so much Heleen!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hi Heleen! There might only be 638 Active IUOMA Members according to my latest findings, but one of them is more than making up for this by setting herself up as our International Copyright Expert -- even though she doesn't know what she's talking about in her comments on Rose's bike photo. I hope the weekend weather is mild and that you can go cycling in the polders. I wish I could -- even cycling up and down the hills in Zuid Limburg. Bon weekend, Val
The number of IUOMA Members is falling in my Birthday analysis, slowly but surely as the month unfolds. It is now down to 646 Members, 20% of the total.
One in five supposed IUOMA are here and active, but I don't know where, or even if, the other 4 out of 5 are in the Mail Art universe.
Happy New Year, Heleen! I hope that you have enough oliebollen to share with the other 680 'active' IUOMA members that my Birthday analysis reveals -- about 1 in 5 of the niminal IUOMA members.
Enough for a good party and lots of oliebollen though.
Hello Heleen--It seems that our mail art works have been crossing paths. I was checking out the Tiny Art Project and came across your MUMA--absolutely delightful! My third entry to the project was sent out last week and I'm sure it will be blogged soon.
Heleen--thank you for posting the link to the Van Abbe Museum's catalogue. I was pleased to have my mail art pictured and to be listed among the participants.
Glad you liked it, nice pictures in your blog too. Yes it was an experiment mailing the brain cell letter to you and I really thought it would reach all the way... maybe later?! I sent another one with just 20+ complete adresses on it and no marker to favorite an adress, it is like throwing out a bottle into the sea and hope it will reach someone, and hopefully this someone will show it, I put my adress inside the envelope not to make the post office return it.

You're very welcome. I didn't know about your Weird Existing Animals blog — very enjoyable site. I guess there's no truly weird animals on the piece I sent you, but perhaps [perhaps] I may come across some unruly beast of strangeness that will better satisfy your readership. See you in the mail.
