The battle for art history - from Grigori Antonin

There was a time when I thought that I would never receive another postcard from Le Grigstaire. Or at least not with that same signature of his. I was wrong, and so happy that he resumed his mailing activities, it was a great surprise to find this in my mailbox.
This piece is quite a dark one though. La Battaglia di Legnano (see below for the original painting) is quite a violent sight on its own. Like in an attempt to erase this battle field, Grigori vividly scribbled on top of it with a thick golden pen (or paint?). The result is quite interesting, I really like how the top right corner came out. But I can feel the pain all over, Grigori, it's written black on gold. Are you already having more than a few scratches in the battle for art history?
The back of the card is very topical, with US navy admirals, and a very vintage feel to the paper, it's a bit like letters my grandma got during the war. Oh, I hope this is not a declaration of war!
Thanks Grigori, I'm on your side in that battle.

Thanks for dropping in Sloan. Glad you like the super-hero triptych, you got the first one of a series. No need for guilt, really, I liked the holes in the paper, that's pure Sloanism if you ask me :-)
The Giant will be following soon.....
Have a good weekend!

Hi Marie, I'm just sitting here catching up on messages, and this great stuff is coming online. Truly - what an interesting piece of mail-art this is (above). Thanks for the commentary because I didn't know anything about this painting. Given the terms of the Minnesota Accord, I won't hazard interpretations beyond: "I like this mail-art." As fate would have it I just opened a beautiful envelope from you that I thought was The Crimsoned Titantic and instead it's the super-hero triptych, which is wonderful, I'm looking at it out of one eye, only there's this guilt that in this exchange you received blank paper with holes in it. Oh, and there's nothing under the gauze. That's meant to use if you injure your finger. Superman - yes! So that's my next blog post - you're piece. I'm totally impressed.
