Mail-art by IUOMA member Kiera Pannell (Montreal, Canada)
January 4, 2011 - Kiera Pannell has developed a very distinctive mail-art style doing sketches, often of faces. This piece I recently received from her (above) is a good example. We have been IUOMA friends since last summer, just after she finished school in Britain and traveled across Europe issuing mail-art from different locations. Along with the drawing, I was pleased to receive some correspondence from her:
More about Kiera's show ahead. Here's the back of her message:
For new IUOMA friends, I need to explain Kiera had the tremendous misfortune of having been involved in the incidents now associated with the infamous Monkey Purge, especially fantastic rumors that circulated concerning the reasons for her visit to Prague and the role of her mail-art in a rambling and incoherent debate about J.D. Salinger and Stephen Spender. I cannot bring myself to go through the story again. (See the earlier "Cheryl Penn's Harrowing Mail-Art Monkey Ordeal" for a complete account.) And before I check into Self-Absorption Ltd. (again) I will explain there was a barrage of mail-art agitprop issued from an individual in a Midwestern (US) state about an entirely fictitious movement that bears my name. This seems to have been prompted by the alleged mailings of the "Grigster" cult kits and their subsequent recall. Kiera assures me the horror is over, which I appreciate, and you can also find out about her excellent show:
I am amused by the Queen Kiera part of the note but would caution her that in mail-art things like this can take on a life of their own. Here's Kiera Pannell's envelope:
Great to hear from you Kiera, I've been seeing your work at the IUOMA and elsewhere. I never want to miss the chance to write a letter, so expect one from me soon. Kiera's blog:
