Met Richard Canard Today and He HANDED Me This!

Today I met my first fellow mail artist, the wonderful and kind Richard Canard. We spent an hour talking about mail-art, Ray Johnson, and a host of other things. Learned a lot and had a great time. Decided to honor the meeting by making a lot of new things to send out, like 18 new things. Hopefully this will be the first of many meetings with inspirational mail-artists.

Here's what he handed me, a fake Ray Johnson.

By the way, I've written a whole big thing about the meeting, but I'm swamped at work this week...so please be patient. I will post my essay as soon as I can finish things up.

sometimes Richard's straight shooting wisdom is a jagged little pill to swallow, but he speaketh the trutheth

"Isn't it iconic?"

I am a big RR Nevermind fan. Wish he would check in more often. But his flat rejection of DK's idea was a little fascistic. In fact, Nevermind saw the physical likeness of DK to Saundra Dee (?) (50s movie star?). But the RR Nevermind incident did send DK out to start her own thing. And that's like making lemons into lemonade.

Richard is a bridge of inspiration connecting what never was to what never will be... I appreciate all he is doing. The most recent wisdom he sent me: "Mail-art will ruin your life, if done correctly."

(BTW, some of that Rayjo crew had a spot of trouble with fake RayJo's on ebay a few years back as people kept signing stuff RayJo after he died - all part of the performance, I'm sure.)

sounds fantastic Dean, I haven't been to a concert in God knows when. I like her lyrics. Okay, no roadkill. I was going to send you bits of Squirrly the musical lounge singing squirrel.

No Diane, you've done that trick already.  Don't try to improve on something so "Perfect"  Which reminds me that I got tickets to see Alanis Morissette on 26 November in Paris.  Small place, 2000 seats.  Keep it real.

Lucky you Jon! Richard is the wittiest mail art philosopher I know. Dean-I had no idea you would enjoy some roadkill art. I will now be on the lookout!

OH yes that DK roadkill, I had hear all about it, but never knew who it was sent to.  I think I told Diane time after time "Brillant",  but then she didn't send it to me.  Small details can change everything!

Richard has definitely earned an honorary degree from Ray Johnson's Buddha University. Here are some pages he did for one of Cheryl's vispo book projects:

There are a number of original RayJo correspondents lurking about a Yoma. Another is Rain Rein Nevermind who hosts the Recycling Mail-art Group. Now there's a character, IMHO.

Rain Rein and DK had a now famous falling out over roadkill that led to the birth of Trashpo.

WOW I thought that Richard Canard was a made up legend.  Now you're telling me that he is a

legend in his own time!  It's looking to be a good Monday morning after all.

PS My vote is for Jon Rayster.  It has a nice ring to it.
