Nancy Bell Scott's Blog (364)

from Dr. Zack, an incredible origami mail-art, 3-dimensional of course, that arrived completely intact from France to Maine USA

Origami stars, yes? Beautiful (and jaw-dropping to one who has never accomplished any origami):

Those images are from a scanner, which doesn't do the piece justice. What a mail-art day when it…

from Katerina Nikoltsou

It arrived this fall and could be my all-time favorite from Katerina. A beautiful fabric collage:

Thank you, Kat! I've been looking at it every day since it arrived.

I'm still laughing and thinking because of this one. Thanks,…

Not ONE but TWO from Ilya Semenenko-Basin

Very nice and striking collages:

Each arrived in Maine about a month after Ilya mailed it. We can't send to him from the U.S., but apparently the U.S.P.S. is fine with receiving from Russia. Many thanks, Ilya --…

Debra Mulnick

Debra sent this in March, but it's still pandemic time here in Maine too, at least for some of us:

This is a wonderful, big, and strong piece, and includes the stitching that I appreciate in Debra's multifaceted work. The Lily Tomlin quote is also a beaut (and new to me). Below is the envelope, which shrunk during my attempt to post it here: …

mail art to Russia returned by USPS

This mail art I sent to Ilya in Moscow two weeks ago was returned today. Not a surprise, as AFTER it was sent google said USPS is not accepting mail from here to there, as of March 11. My fault. I'm posting in case anyone else needs to know. Sorry about this, Ilya, but it's good to see you are receiving mail art from other countries.

Peace…

Zack / Jason Motsch / Jon Foster

Top left: Zack, who noticed I'd favorited this in Photos and sent it on, lucky for me. I love its artful liveliness and sense of both celebration AND the relative chaos of life. Yet there is appealing space in it too. It turns out to be even more enjoyable in person.

Top right: from Jason Motsch, who wrote (to sum up) that he enjoys trying…

M.L. Stephens

This colorful + well-composed collage and this subtly elegant print arrived in separate mailings from M.L. Stephens. I appreciate each for itself, and also that she explores very different mediums (who couldn't learn from this? I could!). With thanks…

Luis Filipe Gomes

A favorite of Luis's mail arts to arrive here, because the drawing and painting are so fresh and uplifting -- and educational! -- and maybe also because this quince tree in Portugal is so different from the flowering quince here in Maine. This apple-quince fruit looks different from our very round,…

Laura Hughes

Laura's organic and yet ethereal inkings struck me at first sight, and I'm lucky to have received these from her during the past few months. They are "small" (in size only) and intricate/intimate works that illustrate both earth-level and cosmic-level features of our world. To me they represent a beautiful array of life…

"Lost in Dreams" from Carien van Hest

This piece by Carien really moves me. It's beautifully done, and the title, "Lost in Dreams," is perfect. The metallic lines at upper left and lower right speak both of movement and of a sense…

From top down. LEFT: Richard Canard (fab trashpo he sent!); James Chester (from 2019, it's a favorite); Nadine Wendell-Mojica. Almost first blog since 2014 (except for Sharon Silverman 2019) -- thanks, IUOMA, for still being here

From top down. Left: Renee "Motherbrando"; Jan Hodgman. Middle: Heide Monster, and 2 from Petrolpetal. Right: Samantha Price, Rebecca Guyver, and David Stafford. Friends, I wish I could blog everything like in the old days, but being at least half-luddite (and getting worse, haha) prevents it, as well as having the slowest + most infuriating scanner…

Sharon Silverman's 50 MAILART BOOKS project -- WOW

Above and beyond "documentation"! This is a jaw-dropping gift.

Sharon's project is here: http://iuoma-network.ning.com/events/50-mailart-books. She is working on what she calls a "small library" of mailart books, and she pairs each of the 10 pieces you send her with a work of her own.…
