Jen, you nailed it. Alternatively, it could be the work of a mental patient who is struggling to juggle the many personalities as they compete for control of the style that flows from the pen nib.

I love his quill-pen addresses!  I imagine David hunkered down over a bottle of India ink with a monocle and a huge feather pen scribbling by candle-light...complete with ink-stained fingers and smudges on his shirt...
