I have exchanged postcards for more than 30 years and there are some incredibly beautiful mass-produced commercial postcards in my collection. I also have incredibly moving handmade postcards. And I've received lots and lots of crap of both sorts. My philosophy on any mail exchange is that it isn't the medium that is the motivation, it is the connection to another human being.

Jon ...
Be careful tho...
U MUST cater to some aspect of the profile....
I got an e-mail from the founder & the only reason I am still allowed to participate is because I proved that i create something specifically for them based on some aspect of the profile...

I just started with postcrossing and have sent about ten cards out to people. I have no interest in catering to their very specific interests, which I think goes directly against the random and somewhat implied nature of the website.

I enjoy seeing personlity come through with even the most crudely created postcard rather than something a card company mass-produced.

I feel the same way with this website-these are the types of things that I make and that's what I'm going to send. Even if I don't like what someone creates I always send them something back, this also goes for all of the cards that I send to new folks.

That is a good idea Laura.

Gosh people are going to so much care -it sounds like a real labour of love. I hope I receive such a response on there (but doubt it) ! I am looking forward to mine arriving and then receiving in return.

I hope one day to receive something from andy; and from Marguerite !!

:)

It's a great discussion I agree Marguerite Keen!

I find that it's very rare that I have something perfectly suited to peoples interests in my postcard stack, and find making a handmade is the only way I can satisfy myself that I've fulfilled the request.

However, I never send handmade when they specifically state not to and sometimes get a little nervous when they don't specify that handmade is ok. It would be such a waste if after all that effort they didn't appreciate it

This is a great discussion! I've been a member of Postcrossing for 4 months and do my best to send only handmade cards. When I request an address, I view each profile as a sketchbook assignment. Some are more challenging that others. Sometimes I choose one interest to focus on, sometimes I try to create a cohesive collage from several interests. If someone requests only store-bought cards, I honor this, because for me, it's more about sending mail that will make the recipient smile. I do tend to stick stuff (postal ephemera usually) on the purchased cards as well, so they end end up with my personal touch. If I'm short on time, I'll send one of my recycled greeting card postcards that I've collaged a bit. I've not received any bad feedback, and several of my cards are favorites. Hooray for Real Mail!

Laurence, I don't know if they are "lucky" or not, LOL, but that is what they are gonna get, lol!!!! I figure anyone can buy a card, but my cards are each an original-no two are the same...

I am a member of Postcrossing, and I send only handpainted postcards. I haven't had any complaints so far, and several of them have been marked as "favorites". I also put in my own profile that I only send hand made postcards...I love getting hand made mail art and postcards-that is the main reason I do it-to exchange with other artists around the world.
