My first encounter with "Free Art" was something I found inserted in a book at the Main Library in St. Louis about 15 years ago.  Although you can often find something inserted in a book, usually a left-behind bookmark, this piece of art was inscribed with the wish that it would be found by someone who would appreciate both the discovery and the art itself, which I did.

Lots of fun ideas..I think it would be fun..to leave business cards..with the least amount of info..around..Like "MIB".. I am always willing to take art and thumb tack it or leave in places with mine stuff..I also have art..that has worlds..on it..with my messy handwriting. stuff like "take me".."stolen",and it goes on..it is in a box..for future ideas..I am working on leaving zip lock art..folded prints and mini..I am phazing out my name..and using HAVM..It would be also cool..to get connected to local coffee places..and see if they would have a place that will house art that people can take.Like the city newspaper..Amp up some add and pass magazines..that the end will be in a public zone.

@HAVM LTD.: anything can be art, and anyone can do it. ;-D

there's been a small chatter about the leaving art in public on my event thread, just like you had talked about in message with me. I think we could make something of that. It was more my intention to use the term FREE to mean FREEDOM, but I did tell De Villo Sloan that I liked how it was somewhat ambiguous. It could also mean, FREE, TAKE ONE!

I'm planning to use your idea to distribute all the mail art I've received throughout Iowa City over the next month or so. In little manilla packets, with a photo printout of my FREE ART logo.

I'd love if anyone else wants to get on board with me, and leave either their own art or art they've received, along with a sign saying FREE ART!

I can post them here and on the blog, if you like.

all depends on the art and outcome. Like music and samples..Ice Ice baby..

"Hope" picture showed that artist have conflicts with photos reproducting. Then you have people who have ownership of Rocks, land, water, sometime in the future Air. Too much Free and artist taking in all the cost of producing isn't that free. Artist looking for company bi-products to make lower cost are could work. I am sure paper companies have run off..a producer of rubber parts..can be used for print making.Billboards can be used as canvas.

i think that sentiment can easily be carried over into art.

freedom to share, study, and modify.

this is especially relevant in digital art,

and i'd like to see more back and forth free flow of  digital pieces without the worry of connecting the art to a particular artist. art should be like children to parents. it doesn't belong to the artist, the artist merely produces it.

here's a link from the FSF about Free Software

the first sentence summarizes it beautifully:

Free software is software that gives you the user the freedom to share, study and modify it. We call this free software because the user is free.

a clip of a conversation with Human Artist Vending Machine:

as for your goals, i find it hard to influence people to do things.

people are generally self-absorbed. there is too much inflow

in our technologic age to allow people the luxury they once had

of stopping to admire things in full detail. that is part of the

reason when creating my "manifesto," i included the saying

release early, release often, art needs to change because

people are changing. everything is in high speed now.

art should be more like twitter, a flash and it is gone,

nobody has time to appreciate intricacies anymore.
