Superhero, you have spoken to the anti-luddite in me. i can see what you mean about using non-digital references as a kind of "clip art" for the digital. I get it.Its the same as cutting stuff out of magazines to make collage. -Neil

"fluxus for dummies" ... i think i've found my newest project....

It might exist and I just don't know about it, but I would really love a book list- a sort of "So you call yourself a mail artist?" required reading. I learn so much here, but see a huge market for "Mail art for dummies" book "Fluxus for dummies" "Post Modernism for dummies" etc. All these urban explore photos are great. Seeing the street side view gives you a real sense of what a place is about more than what image is conjured in your head (Okay, MY head)-most likely based on cartoonish cliches:)

and erni, i understand if you're not into digital, not everyone is.

but it doesn't mean you don't have a part to play in digital art.

digital artists need people like you for your wonderful source materials!

the stuff you make can be easily incorporated into digital works,

and i have nothing but the highest respect for what you do!

i just want you to know that!

i'd just like to see what people can do with some simple digital tools.

i use gimp (gimp.org) it is completely free software, not just free

as in costs no money, but free as in open source, modifiable,

like a tool that you have all the specs for and can change to do different jobs.

ultimately that is what i would like free art to be about as well.

freedom to modify / copy / reproduce.

democratic art.

i think digital art has a big role the future of this sort of thinking.

i know there are more like this, but i can't find them!!!

i'll ask him to dig them up.

but here is an example.

a photo with digital drawing overlay.

land web art

i didn't know there was a name for that either, but i've seen lots of "land art" at the IC Public Library in their wonderful art section! the ones i like most are the guy (name unremembered) who would work all night with water, freezing it into sculpted ice and using flower petals, etc in a sculpture that would dissolve the next day.

it was all about capturing the instant on film.

but i don't have time to dig through bruno cassaglia's stuff right now, but his landwebart is taking photos then drawing, crudely, over them in an art program.

they look like child's drawings, using digital colour,  over an actual photo.

if someone could repost some here while i'm gone i would be highly appreciative.

perhaps seeing some will trigger erni's encyclopoedic knowledgebase!
