My Life as a Collage & DK - "Fluxus for Dummies" - you're not dummies. I read something today that might help. Dick Higgins & Ken Friedman (very Fluxus people) both did lists of Fluxus characteristics. The results are similar and help define something that's fairly sprawling and that has been made overly mysterious and complicated:

Fluxus by Dick Higgins:

internationalism

experimentation

intermedia

minimalism

attempts to resolve life/art dichotomy

implicativeness

play or gags

ephemerality

specificity

Fluxus by Ken Friedman

(Friedman identified friends we know here at IUOMA as Fluxus in an influential book. They include: Ruud Janssen, Litsa Spathi, David Chirot, and Reed Altemus)

globalism

experimentation

intermedia

simplicity

unity of art/life

implicativeness

playfulness

presence in time

specificty

chance

musicality

If you identified with 7 or more of the above, you might be a candidate for Fluxus - not really. Hope this helps.

IMHO, it's not much different than this:

if people get mad at re-use that's their problem.

i mean as long as you're not selling your art, i never hear news of people getting sued over this sort of thing. if you're selling your art, then that's probably a whole different bag of bones. but, that is the sort of thing i think is important. i think you should be able to re-fuckwith art in news ways and if you want, sell it.

it's also important because right now you can google up pictures of just about anything and swipe them and incorporate them into your own artwork. some day it may not be like that. look at apple's version of music, they have built their entire system around keeping people from doing what they want with their digital devices. it's quite difficult, using apple hardward/software to copy your music from one place to another. whereas if you use open source software on your ipod like rockbox, i makes it simple to copy your music from place to place.

the world is moving more and more from freedom toward proprietized systems. there is no reason other than greed of media corporations for why this is the way it is.

i will cry the day i have to pay a fee to re-use someone's picture in my art.

This is a fascinating idea-I would never have thought of blending these two forms
