Oh yes--used t have almost all of Bob Kaufman;s books--my father had a couple which is how i started reading him--met him once, before and a bit after--a reading--the actual "Beats" were very much the opposite of many of the wannabes--well educated and as well lifelong readers and experimenters with all manner of media-scholarly really--not the "know nothing Bohemians" that -anti-anything new, different, interesting Norman Podhoretz coined the phrase for--not poseurs--"I takes a superbly discipined musician to play Free Jazz" as Don Cherry used to say--the real Beats all worked hard every day, were disciplined--and interested in everything cultural--arts music film --the wannabes professed a kind of shoddy boredom --struck nihilistic poses--some of the traits that went into the neo-hippie types were nurtured by the wannabes and hangers on--though this type one encounters at any age of human history--see them around today--"persons to avoid"--
