I'm making a simple database of all the contacts I have ever had over the last 30+ years, it's not completed yet but I estimate about 2.5 thousand. I'll send details when I've finished the processing

We have both read it. Thank and we will look and look. My database is growing and never complete. Too much data sometimes and so little time. Where does one buy time?

Expect some more mail in the Chan hassen box

Since I joined IOUMA in mid-September, about 50.
In the previous 10 years, exactly 1.

Mail-Art can be adictive. In the 80-ies I remember a periode where I sent out over 500 envelopes in one month. The record responses back then on a single day was 42 pieces of Mail-Art. When dealing with numbers like that you don't have time for other things. So I sometimes had to take time of. In the 2000+ years the mail-art sent out became much less. There is only 24 hours in a day....
500 in a month...wow!

I can see only too well the addictive nature of Mail Art.

Perhaps IUOMA should offer a Counselling Service and/or a Mail Art Annonymous Group (modelled on Alcoholics Annonymous).

The Service, following the advice of the American Psychological Association, would focus on us:

* admitting that one cannot control one's addiction or compulsion;
* recognizing a greater power that can give strength;
* examining past errors with the help of a sponsor (experienced member);
* making amends for these errors;
* learning to live a new life with a new code of behavior;
* helping others that suffer from the same addictions or compulsions. (By NOT sending them Mail Art? Oh no!)

And then the Mail Art Annonymous Group could follow the original Twelve Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous, but making the necessary changes for Mail Art and religious belief:

1.We admitted we were powerless over alcohol—that our lives had become unmanageable.
2. Came to believe that a Power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity.
3. Made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of God as we understood Him.
4. Made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves.
5. Admitted to God, to ourselves, and to another human being the exact nature of our wrongs.
6. Were entirely ready to have God remove all these defects of character.
7. Humbly asked Him to remove our shortcomings.
8. Made a list of all persons we had harmed, and became willing to make amends to them all.
9. Made direct amends to such people wherever possible, except when to do so would injure them or others.
10. Continued to take personal inventory and when we were wrong promptly admitted it.
11. Sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with God as we understood Him, praying only for knowledge of His will for us and the power to carry that out.
12. Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these steps, we tried to carry this message to alcoholics, and to practice these principles in all our affairs.

THIS IS GETTING A BIT TOO HEAVY FOR ME...SO I AM GOING FOR A PRE-SUNDAY LUNCH DRINK. Santé/Cheers/Prost/Skol etc

Regards, Val
I suggest you open the group as soon as possible and offer us all counseling.......

(by the way, cheers!)
I fear my professional fees would be too high, and I think I'll stick to sending bits of Mail Art to those who need them...and even those who don't.

(Now if we get into 'needs' as well, that could open a whole new debate, but I'll have another drink instead.)

Regards,
Val
I've made a poll out of this question. So far 7 polls have been launched. They will form the start of a new publication that will come out in 2011.
Thanls Ruud. Let me know if I can help with, inter alia, i) any further questions, ii) interpreting the results you've got so far (including writing them up), iii) anything else. My original offer to help out remains open for ever, and ever. Regards, Val
