RECEIVED: BrAtitude Girl Goes to Finishing School Mail-Art from Diane Keys (Elgin, Illinois)

Mail-art by IUOMA member Diane Keys (Elgin, Illinois)

January 11, 2011 - After her meteoric rise to success in mail-art with the controversial Roadkill Club, Diane Keys became concerned she was a one hit wonder. (Forget her concept had penetrated the fashion world with the popular Roadkilt). I knew it wasn't true and did all my best to assure her: "Diane, look at your trash collages. You make some of the finest traspho I've seen." I saw some of her junk mail art and suggested a future in that. My mailbox endured a long DK dry spell. Then arrive thiss new iteration of her Attitude Girl character. And it's laminated.

Here's a copy of a posting Diane made here at the IUOMA explaining the Attitude Girl concept:

"Atttitude Girl Nation is a place for the outsiders of the 'IN' crowd and the card carrying members of the anti-clique. Everyone there wears rose colored glasses and is free from the constraints of society's narrow vision of what is success and worthy pursuits. People practice the art of doing without doing. No effort and individuality are the order of the day. Art supplies are provided free to the public and art in schools is mandatory. Artists and teachers are the highest paid profession, while doctors, lawyers etc. work for the government and eek by. Refugees of the status quo welcome!" - Diane Keys

I recently told Diane I was not sure about her Keysian theories. The new piece she sent I think is the story of Attitude Girl's experience in a Finishing School for Young Ladies. I know today it would be military school or survival training, but the old texts she includes in the bag suggest some sort of dislocation in time, kind of a feminist "Gunslinger" or something - but I digress. The reverse side has some interesting things too:

Ah, a new mail-art mystery: Who is Dark Wall? We shall leave that for another day. Thanks, DK - Di-namic!
