In October 2025, a small kiosk on Treptower Straße in Berlin briefly became one of the most compelling sites of contemporary experimental art. For three days, the OPEN TINY KIEZKIOSK — ordinarily a modest node in the daily life of Neukölln — transformed into a porous, improvisational field of action. Under the title FLUXUS 2025 – OPEN TINY BIG, the space hosted a sequence of gestures, performances, and interventions that refused the conventions of exhibition-making. What unfolded was not a show, but a condition: a state of flux, participation, and shared imagination.
The project emerged from a transnational movement that began months earlier. In August, FLUXUS 2025 took shape in Chicago as an interdisciplinary festival led by Ellyzabeth Adler and guided by the charismatic presence of Kao Ra Zen. There, performance, dance, and visual art dissolved into one another, creating a participatory environment in which audiences became co‑authors of the unfolding work. In September, the energy migrated to Hannover, where the ZINNOBER Kunstfestival hosted more than 180 international positions in a setting that privileged process over product, gesture over object.
Berlin became the third station in this evolving trajectory — a city whose urban fabric has long supported experimental, provisional, and socially engaged art. In Neukölln, FLUXUS 2025 took on its most radically open form. The weekend began with Susanne Schumacher’s performance What is Fluxus? Say it loud – OPEN TINY BIG, a declaration that framed Fluxus not as historical reference but as contemporary urgency. Her sculptural action the following day, Hommage to Wolf Vostell, supported by Friedrich Schumacher, reactivated the legacy of the Fluxus pioneer through raw, tactile materials — small-scale street cruisers cast in cement and concrete, objects that carried both weight and metaphor.
Other contributions expanded the field. Asma Ounine’s serigraphy action Berliner Bären – Druck introduced a hand‑press into the kiosk, turning printmaking into a communal, haptic encounter. Rainer Wieczorek’s wall piece Peaceman and his assemblage created within the press offered poetic signals of resistance and solidarity — works that functioned less as objects than as propositions. Lars Schumacher, initiator and conceptual voice of the Berlin edition, presented his Asphalt Philosophy, an urban concept that understands art as embedded within the rhythms, frictions, and textures of city life. The introduction of Event Scores — open-ended instructions for artistic action — invited visitors to become participants, extending the Fluxus tradition of collective authorship.
What distinguished OPEN TINY BIG was not only the diversity of contributions but the atmosphere they generated. Conversations spilled onto the sidewalk; gestures emerged spontaneously; quiet moments of reflection coexisted with bursts of improvisation. The kiosk became a site of encounter rather than display — a place where art was not consumed but lived. Visitors were not spectators but collaborators in a shared process.
The Berlin edition affirmed a central premise of Fluxus: that art need not be finished to be meaningful, nor polished to be powerful, nor exclusive to be relevant. It demonstrated that artistic experience can arise from provisional structures, from everyday materials, from the willingness to act without certainty. In this sense, FLUXUS 2025 – OPEN TINY BIG was less an event than a promise — a reminder that art can remain open, porous, and resistant to closure.
As the project continues to evolve across cities and contexts, it becomes clear that FLUXUS 2025 is not a fixed program but a growing network, a condition in motion. Future iterations may appear in other temporary resonance spaces — places that, like the kiosk in Neukölln, allow art to unfold in its most immediate, spontaneous, and democratic form.
