I had a gentle reminder from She Who Must Be Obeyed that I had not blogged her beautiful book yet. As it is not strictly Mail Art I had not thought to show it to you all in IUOMA, but as we have had some other Bones of Contention works here it is. I am so so honoured that the book was made specially for me, using some images from a collaborative book that Cheryl and I had done in 2009. The pages are made from another of Cheryl's books that she took apart and remade the paper. Using her signature stiching, stamped letters and bits of mesh Cheryl has managed to again astound me with this book, it is so tactlie and thought provoking. What is the bone of contention here? Is it the fact that our styles of working are so different? In the original book I found Cheryl's work to be quite dark in subject matter and i tried to lighten it with my drawings much to Cheryl's amusement. She says "YOU CAN TRY LIGHTEN A DIALOGUE"

I love the meandering and zigzagging of the red thread throughout the book, holding it all together. (Is there any red thread left in Durban shops I wonder??)

I have just noticed whilst sitting here waiting for the upload that the bones are sewn on with GREY thread and each bone has a little symbol pencilled onto them. That is what I love about Cheryl - expect the unexpected!

And thanks to the Penn family for saving all their roast chicken bones.

Oh and the book is large - 25 x 18 cm.

Alicia probably doesn't realize we've had extended discussions about the sanctity of the artist's intent and vision. And when it comes to obeying Cheryl, I don't know about your Lost African Kingdoms, but when Cheryl says "Jump" I say "How high?"

Thanks for blogging Les - She Who Must Be Obeyed???? I wonder what  Horace Holly and his ward Leo Vincey in their journey to the  lost kingdom in African would think about that :-)) - And old Henry Rider Haggard? I suppose he would be pleased to see there are others who have carried on Ayesha'a legacy :-)))  - thanks DVS - Alicia - this book is doing its THIRD incarnation, so its doing its own thing ;-) X

Oh my gosh! Ayesha - to disobey her or to scorn her is to earn and receive instantaneous death! That's why I blogged your book.... grovel grovel

I would prefer text that is less ambiguous. On second thought, no, I think I'll just go with what Cheryl did with the work and appreciate it.

beautiful book Cheryl . would have preferred more ambiguous, mysterious text. More in nature with the construction and tactile elements of piece.  Just a thought. No complaints.
