...in this wonderful wrap-envelope that nearly didn't survive the postal system: The envelope arrived torn, with the book-covers educational brochure sitting beside it. Lucky! Lisa tells me she took the chance because the map is of my own part of the world. You can see it just south of Portland. I'm very happy she took the chance.
The "pictorial guide shows the changes in design and technology found in the covers of American books between 1830 and 1900. The adoption of book cloth glued onto a prepared case was a turning point in the history of publishing. It allowed publishers to present their books to the public in the form of small advertising posters. Historically these covers encompass the opening out of the west, the Civil War, the 'gilded age' and into the sophistication of the turn of the 20th century. The guide is organized by decades."
The guide is big, but scans were made that show the decades involved and the beautiful examples of book covers for each one. There is some overlap, due to a lack of grace in the household scanning person (me). But you'll get the idea, and I'm very grateful to Lisa for sending me this--info I've never had before even though a lover of book covers. Thanks again, Lisa. Out of order, too! Who doesn't need an extra challenge.

I love these and I have something special in mind for Skybridge when time permits....I actually ran one cover with your book materials, Lisa but I didn't realize the ink had to dry and I smudged it. Not the kind of happy accident one can build upon unfortunately...Sometimes a smudge is just a smudge...I did, however, buy some PVA (?) and it has changed my life. This is before I read the instructions.
It is special--I'm so glad to have it. Yes, the front of the map wrap survived well, and though the back was no longer intact, only a couple of little pieces are actually gone. Most of it is still there, and since my town didn't get lost, that's the main thing. :--} Those stamps! It's a big deal to me that they arrived, as you know. You're very thoughtful ...
What a great idea to send this to someone who loves book covers. I like it a lot!
