The first black painting was created by Robert Fludd in London in 1617 - eat your heart out Kazimir Malevich.

I’m afraid Robert Fludd got there first . . . and by a long way. There have been numerous claims as to who created the first black picture, but so far none precede Robert Fludd. His numerous treatises contain a mine of information on a great variety of topics. The topic I’m interested in is music and musical instruments. Fortunately Fludd wrote vociferously on the subject and provided excelent drawings of fantastical musical instruments, one of which - de motu elemetari - I was commissioned to make by Jocelyn Pook (composer for Eyes Wide Shut) to make for a film. I’ll post a stamp sheet on the subject of 'The Elemental Motor'.

... but, in 1915, Kazimir Malevich applied it to Russia and environs which propelled it into the 20th Century.  My nephew has the Malevich Square tattooed onto the side of his ribcage!
