03.08.13 Dare Red Door Gallery,  Yes(as ironic as it may seem), I too think you've got a nice project.  I have been  involved in "Mail Art" for nearly 50 years now & have long witnessed that  most mail art participants (for one reason or another)have a tendency to utilize the so-called  "Unwritten Rules of Mail Art"  & also whenever convenient do not hesitate calling upon the one that is perhaps the most dear of all..... & that is..." There are no rules in mail art"....except maybe the ones one chooses  to apply". By all means (& in the sacred name of "Mail  Art", please continue to do what is advantageous for your gallery & your chosen artists. Best Wishes for your project. Richard Canard

Kathleen, The article was written by Ruud Janssen, the founder of IUOMA. I've send it to you as background information.

You'll find the text just above the image of the bananas. Have a great weekend too.

I am sorry but I did not find this "a Mail Art show has no jury, no entry fee, there is no censorship, and all works are exhibited." in the link you placed in your post.  Are these your words?

I did find this in a link that was in your post ;

This article has multiple issues. Please help improve it or discuss these issues on the talk page.

Some or all of this article's listed sources may not be reliable. (January 2013)

have a great weekend and our jury has been established not to judge but to give all artists an equal opportunity.  One person deciding on the artists, we felt was not a fair chance for all artists.

have a great weekenf yourself.

Kathleen,

It may be interesting to read this: http://iuoma-network.ning.com/group/askanything/forum/topics/what-i...

"The Mail Art philosophy of openness and inclusion can be summed up in a few “considerations” of networking etiquette that are usually explicitly stated in the invitations (calls) to postal projects: a Mail Art show has no jury, no entry fee, there is no censorship, and all works are exhibited. The original contributions are not to be returned and remain the property of the organizers, but a catalogue or documentation is sent free to all the participants in exchange for their works. Although these “unwritten” rules are sometimes stretched, they have generally held up for four decades, with only minor dissimilarities and adjustments, like the occasional requests to avoid works of explicit sexual nature, calls for projects with specific participants, or the recent trend to display digital documentation on blogs and websites instead of personally sending printed paper to contributors".

I speak  up for the interest of mail art and mail artists. I don't have established it for myself....And no, I don't feel robbed:)

It's a good idea t that you've changed the conditions.

And yes I'm dutch.....!

Cheers!

Our project is solid project that has received the European Cultural capital label.

We are not taking it lightly or trying to pull the wool over people's eyes.

Your opinion is yours and thank you for it.  If there are 'unwritten' rules of mail art artists that you have established for yourself, then I respect your desire to receive something back and that it be stated loud and clear. I understand that you may feel like your are being robbed.

Other mail artists may find the opportunity to participate in a prestigious European project enough of a return.  In our new conditions we have stated that all selected artists are entitled to a catalogue as well as a photo on our facebook page and mention as being an artist partner in the donations that will be given to a non-profit youth organization.

Thank you for the suggestions and if you have more, don't hesitate to post your ideas here, it is a pleasure to read them.  cheers Kathlen

(Are you Dutch?)

I do think you’ve got a nice project.

But you’re presenting yourself here between other mail artists. In my opinion your proposal or  call for mailart should be in the right place between the events.

Most mail artist do like it when they receive something back in exchange for their mailart!

It’s one of the nice aspects of mailart. and also one of the “unwritten”rules of mailart.

To publish it online is of course also possible.

For the calendar it would be nice if the selected artists would receive one .

Well what if we publish your work, is that not enough?
