Welcome. SERIOUS and friendly word of advice (ignore it and you might find yourself banned from IUOMA 'cos some people get really p***ed off about comercialisg what we are doing together):
-- concentrate exclusively on the Art part of IUOMA, and completely ignore your marketing, sales, promotional, pr related and financial, economic and commercial activities.
I suspect that, like many people here, I couldn't care less about 'alternative securities' (whatever the heck they are): only art, man, only art.
Bonjour! Then I apologise for misunderstanding you: sorry! I thought that your take on security was part of a marketing promotion, which is why my shackles arose. I just misunderstood your Liverpudlian humour (which is perhaps excusable, as I was born and bred in Darlington, so you will understand the particular cross that I have to bear).
What you'll find in IUOMA is the almost complete absence of commercial activities. We do what we do because we like doing it. There are some professional artists here, but no-one to my knowledge makes any money from Mail Art. As I mailed out something like 650 pieces in 2011, you'll see that the cost of stamps (98% were overseas mailings, half of those to N America), envelopes, glue, photocopying, associated goodies, etc was considerable. And, you might ask, what did I get back for all of this outlay? 600 bits of Mail Art. Was it worth it? Yes it was.
Welcome to the Union, Tomo. I'm the April Mentor, though I'd forgotten I'd said Yes, until Val reminded me. So many artists have had to justify living in places that were not considered residences. I like the way you created justification. If you need any answers to how the Union "works" ask and perhaps I'll have a good answer.
We've been taking month long terms as Mentor, but we're all willing to be helpful to whomever whenever. I'm preparing to do a talk about Mail Art this coming Tuesday and it's fun to look at the history and progression, and my own involvement. I've even met some of the Union members, in person, which has been amazing! Best of luck with the upcoming exhibit.
Tomo, this is a late but friendly welcome to The Eternal Network from a celestial mail artist living in … guess what?...of course in a heavenly corner of the faraway Universe called Republik van Patland. A perfect start here is mail-art exchange. I would like to be the other end on your very beginning at IUOMA when you decide it’s the right time for you to start trading art. If it’s the case at the time your envelope should read as follows:
The Celestial Scribe Caixa Postal 24827 Curitiba-PR 80510-970 Brazil
II look forward to see your piece in my terrene mailbox. Yes! I will do my homework after receiving yours. This is a celestial promise. I’m Patricio, Celestial Scribe & Envelope Provider.
Thanks for the magnificent print Tomo, it was worth the wait. Even doing less involved artwork it is difficult to find the time no wonder it took you a bit longer this super work. Unfortunately the gallery burnt down as you may know but still I have a house full of valuable Mail Art. I shall stick your artwork on my front door which is glass and wait for the reaction. Should be fun, my family/friends/neighbours ignore my mailarty inclinations, with the kind smile they reserve for children and fools. You see, I do not sell it so it couldn't be art. I have two suporters though, my husband and the postman. The last is proud of it, I think, it makes his day.
And now I have put up the poster on the front door, you may say the gateway to the United Queendom of Retailia. I am waiting for the comments of the common people eg; non mailartists. Here is a photo to prove it.
I am sure it will stop a few thieves on their tracks. Thanks again. I am working on something to send to you, slowly.
Carina
