Happy New Year to You and Yours!

In the British paper I read yestreday was a list of key anniversaries for 2011. It includes:

Jan 20: swearing in of JFK, 1961

Mar 3: Jean Harlow born, 1911

April 12: American Civil War began, 1861

May 31: Titanic launched, 1911

June 14 Boy George born, 1961 (I think we can overlook this one)

July 1: Princess Di born, 1961 (or morte accurately, Diana Spencer born)

August 13: Berlin Wall began, 1961

October 22: Val ran his one and only Marathon, 1983

December 29, Aethelreid, Lord of Mercia dies, 1911. His Lordship married King Alfred's daughter and fought the Vikings, but I suspect that you know all this. (Possible sighting later in 'Monty Python and the Holy Grail' film).

There's lots more, and I'm sure a google search would produce lots, lots more.

One of the dates in my newspaper particularly caught my eye: "February 26: Gordon Fraser, greeting card seller, born 1911 (died 1981). Sold 100 million cards a year by the time of his death."

And I thought we could have a Postal History Boutique Mail Art celebration of Gordon's birthday. All together now, "Happy Birthday to you, Happy Birthday to you, Happy Birthday dear Gordon, Happy Birthday to You!"

I thought I could send you a Postcard For Gordon on February 26.

And then I thought -- HERE IT COMES AT LAST -- we could each nominate a day in 2011 that had something (anything) to do with Postal History (defined however you like), and send a piece of Mail Art to everyone else in the Group who had nominated a day.

If you'd like to participate in this, then please send me:

i) the day, and

ii) the theme that you have chosen.

(You can, of course, choose more than one day and theme if you like)

And I'll 'manage' (ha!) a central list.

But if no-one wants to 'play' I'll raise 3 cheers for Gordon on my own.

Regards, Val

One for your diary...

ùFrom Valentin Dolgov in Russia:

11 declared year of space in Russia. 50 years of Flight by Yrri Gagarin into spase!

I think you need to make this date - 12 April - in our calendar/ Valentin N. Dolgov

What about author/mail artist extraordinaire, Nick Bantock's birthday? I believe it to be on or around July 16th.

Maybe we could create a special blog so he would "receive" views of everything we've sent one another?

Let me know what you think of this idea.

Good idea to have a Birthday 'Tribute' type mailing for Nick B, me thinks.

This is very much a Do-It-Yourself Group, so Dear Plush Possum, you organise it, and I'm sure we'll get many participants.

Regards, Val

Guess I forgot to check back here. Oops! Oh, well. II'll check it out with the rest of my group, and we'll see what's what. there's still plenty of time left.

2011 is the unique year when everyone born before 2000 is a total of 111 years.

Take the last two numbers of your birth year and add it to your age on your birthday = 111

For example:

someone born in 1941 is this year 70 years old: 41 + 70 = 111

someone born in 1960 is this year 51 years old: 60 + 51 = 111

someone born in 1975 is this year 36 years old: 75 + 36 = 111

someone born in 1999 is this year 12 years old: 99 + 12 = 111

and if on November 11 this year it is your birthday, and you were born in 1900:

you surely will be: 111 on 11.11.11!

It works for me (sweet 16, and never been kissed).
