For people who read and enjoy good literature--literary classics or literary contemporary and like to make art about it. Using literature as inspiration for our art. Also for people interested in writing letters about literature. This is also a meeting place for The New Arzamas Literary Circle, which is dedicated to writing creative letters on literary topics.

One of a set of cards made while contemplating the poet Theodore Roethke. On November 12, Roethke suffered the first of what was to be many mental episodes. It happened in the cold Michigan woods, and he described the experience as having a "secret" revealed to him, which he said was the secret of "Nijinsky." Nijinsky was a famous ballet dancer who was institutionalized for schizophrenia. With your permission, I'd like to post your artwork at my blog: The Letter Project. I'm also looking for letters about literature and creativity. All works from the blog have gone through the postal system.

with thanks to Cheryl P for supporting me to publish this. Sorry if I offend certain people. Am I responsible for my own dreams? Euh, yeahhh ....
And Eric emailed me a new poem, just crying to be illustrated by me! LoL.
BORROWED WINDOWS
from the day Asterion no longer
fed the beast of the labyrinth
the air was full of stones
centuries after the last stone fell
I made my way back to the house
which was nowhere near
where the tollgate keeper
told me it would be
its foundation lay where
the labyrinth once stood
the last brick of the last wall
had long since crumbled down
what remained were
those borrowed windows
hanging in midair waiting
for the beast to return
and carry them away

Received 2 drawings 2day from Sevgul Suner Dielemans (Belgium but with Turkish roots). Inspired me on the spot to write a new poem (in Dutch).
FUGIT
Haar geheugen blijft onaangetast, zeer zeker.
Hun vlucht wordt terugkeer in een gezamenlijk geheugen.

LIGHTING VARIABILES is the second poetry book from Ivan Glisic (SERBIA) translated by our friend David Stone (USA). The book (subtitle: PASSENGER IN THE MIST) contains many tributes to other artists as Gauguin, Matisse, Dali, Caravaggio, de Chirico, Malevitch, Munch, Duffy, Seurat, Michelangelo, Goya, Van Gogh, Daumier, Degas, Klimt, Archimbaldo and others.
Because the cover is a painting by Caspar David Friedrich I scanned one of the CDF poems and this cover. (GV)
Note that a few years ago there was also a CDF tribute mail art project in Germany.
Hihihi Theresa, I had already reserved this work for you! Got your Asemics Love letter 2day (from Loring to Louis), so this will be the response.
Pessoa has been with me for a long time; discovered him around age 17 (am now 58) and I have not changed my mind about him: one of the greatest poets all time, a mixture of genius and fruitcase,
His poetry and other writings are divided in several authors: Fernando Pessoa, Bernardo Soares, Alvaro de Campos, Alberto Careiro. They all are the same person and each with another literary style. Pessoa pushed the game so far that one author ciritsized the other! He must have had a ball !!!!
The book of disquiet are the journals of Bernardo Soares in fact, only published 47 years after his death and contains prose writings during 20 years! Not much of this is explained into the English translation which is only a small selection.
I also have these complete writings in a Dutch translation (650 pages).
Love the fact that so many entries were on dreams!
The poetic alter ego of Pessoa I admire most is not Pessoa himself (hihi) but Alvaro de Campos (writer of amongst others THE METAPHYSICAL ENGINEER).
My Pessoa poetry books are with Matthias, waiter in the Portuguese GRELHA restaurant in my neighborhood (Ode to the sea and other stuff). I shall see him this evening whle watching the soccer game Spain-Portugal and for obvious reasons I support Portugal. Do not worry; I am NOT a soccer fan but a poet one !!!
Ah, I adored "The Book of Disquiet!" Nice work Guido, as usual! %_^
MY SLEEPING IMAGINATION, painting on large envelope around a quote by Fernando Pessoa on dreams (from his selected jounals).
Whenever I’ve dreamt a lot,
I go out into the street with my eyes open
but I’m still wrapped in the safety of those dreams.
And I’m amazed how many people fail
to recognize my automatism.
For I walk through daily life
still holding the hand of my astral mistress,
and my footsteps in the street are concordant and consonant
with the obscure designs of my sleeping imagination.
And yet I walk straight down the street;
I don’t stumble, I react as I should; I exist.
FERNANDO PESSOA (20 July 1930)
