My artist statement hasn't changed since it was published in the 1979 MFA catalog at SFAI:

"My work is influenced by everyone and everything I come into contact with daily."

Kunst heeft altijd een belangrijke rol gespeeld in het leven van Ruud Janssen. Op 17-jarige leeftijd koos hij echter niet voor een kunstacademie, maar een studie Natuurkunde. Ontdekken hoe alles in elkaar zit en de samenhang van de dingen zien. De kunst geeft hem echter de vrijheid om andere samenhangen te zien. Is een boom een levend wezen, is een mens een plant, is een gezicht een gebouw bewoont door ogen en lichaamdelen? Deze verbindingen zijn typisch voor de werken van Ruud Janssen. Ze zijn spontaan en impulsief gemaakt, wisselend van inkt op papier tot acrylverf op doek.
