This came unsealed and empty. The USPS used their own tape to tape it. We will never know what was inside but I would really love this stamp

I absolutely don't recognize the handwriting. I hadn't thought of the Elgin PO sending me emptiness. was a postal worker making a statement? It did not come postage due or anything. but it came from Elgin and it was actually addressed to my husband, which makes it even stranger. I have never received a stamp like this. why wouldn't it have said damaged or something? I think only David Stafford is capable of solving this mystery--even if it is fictitious

OR....there was no postage, no return address, just your address, Diane.

Could that be Dean Marks' writing..naw, he doesn't send envelopes, not even empty ones.

Is the penmanship Grigori's? See his scribble under the pic he sent:

Svenja Wahl and Grigori Antonin

The US post office in Elgin sent this? As the 45 cent stamping is from 60123 = Elgin.

Did you have to pay postage due???  This is mysterious!

I know right? Very existential==received without content (S)  yes, it came from Elgin so it isn't even mail art, intentionally anyway. If it was mail art that would have made perfect sense.

Minimalistic and a nice postal stamp. In my taste.
