RECEIVED: Tokyo Nights Mail-Art, Karmic Speeding Ticket, and Monkeys from Marie Wintzer (Saitama, Japan)

Mail-art by IUOMA member Marie Wintzer (Saitama, Japan)

February 10, 2011 - Many IUOMA members and others in the mail-art network are familiar with Marie Wintzer's beautiful Tokyo night photos. It is a gift indeed to receive one, and Marie selected a perfect shot for me. Marie is from France and currently lives in Japan. She draws Japanese culture into her mail-art. I can see from the threading the influence of Cheryl Penn's South African Mail-Art School also. What a tremendous synthesis of global cultures taking place and quickly. Here is the reverse side:

Above is a fine example of Marie Wintzer's more text-oriented work. This is just an amazing package, to this point anyway. She also complains about the Mail-Art Psychic. I should have guessed she would take it upon herself to consult Japanese oracles to get the scoop on the future. This is explained in her letter below. Check out the elegant handwriting:

"You'll be fine." Thanks, Marie. I know you're only the messenger. "You're just an errand boy sent to collect a grocer's bill." Or better yet, what's the line from the Ed Dorn biography about his Protestant upbringing? Something like: "Everything is not allright, and it's not going to be allright." Now I get it from Japan instead of from Cotton Mather. Marie even sent proof. This is from the shrine:

This part is fairly cool. Below is the karmic speeding ticket mentioned in the title. I'm probably using karma incorrectly here but that's the flux:

Obviously, you don't want to get slapped with a No. 63. But I have been served. I like: "Intimate people are getting off one by one." Can I just mail the fine in Fluxus Bucks to the shrine? Or do I have to show up in Karmic Court? Anyway, I think SHE got the No. 63 and sent it to me. The good fortune she is keeping is mine. That's OK, Marie. The envelope is a real treat because /// it's monkeys!

This is just the best. I am keeping it in a very prominent place. Definitely one of my all-time favorites. Here's the reverse:

Marie, you know I'm joking about the fortune. This is a very special mail-art gift indeed and much-appreciated. I've praised Marie's Mailbox before and shall do so again now:

This is what monkeys do in Japan. True story, you'll love it.

Relieved to see you Marie. When news of yet another monkey uprising broke this morning, you were nowhere to be found. We were concerned, Is this becoming a familiar story? How many monkey attacks can Cheryl endure? Your monkey envelope is nevertheless incredible - as is the whole package. I love it. Sponge cake? You sure know a lot about the monkey.

Thanks for a great blog Sloan! I'm also enjoying all the comments. Cheryl, 23 monkeys at once!? Are you recovering alright?

I'm sure some stolen sandpo monkey-made mail art will show up somewhere at some point, I'm waiting for that.

I also know for a fact that monkeys will chose sponge cake over banana (don't ask me how I know that).

Last year tigers where not strong enough against monkeys. This year, yes, there is hope, rabbits are cunning guys.

Not Sandpo, but very appropriate, Kat. Ultra Violet is not so much a color as one of Warhol's film stars. And Warhol did the banana paintings. And monkeys like bananas. So there's nothing that doesn't have a place in the cosmic order today.

Be careful, them thar monkeys like mail art...(wait a minute, this is not ultra-violet...nor Sandpo)
