Received: Mail-Art Crisis? JF CHAPELLE Pegs the Fluxus Buck (Bordeaux Cedex, France)

Mail-art by IUOMA member JF CHAPELLE (Bordeaux Cedex, France)

December 5, 2010 - Governments all over the globe have been printing currency in response to the economic crisis. Why not Fluxus too? JF CHAPELLE has put together a wonderful mail-art package addressing the crisis and containing Fluxus Bucks he made. Considering that JF is one person and not a government, he is doing an excellent job circulating this material. His Fluxus Bucks are providing much-needed relief to artists across the world; they seem to be turning up everywhere. Here's a front and back view of one of two bucks I received from JF:

Things I receive from JF (and examples of his work I have seen elsewhere) are always thought-provoking and often bring a smile. His style is very distinctive. I'm pondering what he means with the DA DA reference. Here's the back of his crisis card:

JF CHAPELLE is not the only artist making Fluxus Bucks. An international project devoted to this idea has existed for years. The IUOMA has a Fluxus Buck group, and this is a quote from their introductory material:

"'Fluxus Buck' is an artistic project from Julie Jefferies aka. ex posto facto (U.S.A.) which she started in 1994. A 'Fluxus Buck' is an artists' banknote which she distributed into the Mail-Art network. Others created Fluxus Bucks as well." Here is the envelope front:

And get back to where you once belonged:

I follow JF CHAPELLE's blog always wanting to see what he will do next:

Does anyone have other Fluxus Bucks they could post? I would seriously like to see others.

I have just read through the interview. Good process and art practice documentation - thanks Ruud.

In an interview I did with ex post facto she explains the concept. See:

Dear Lisa, thanks for posting the Ex Posto Facto Fluxus Bucks. When I learned about the project, it struck me as being so much in the spirit of Fluxus. I just read about something a group of "Old School" Fluxus artists did. They were annoyed with the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA) in NYC and - apparently through the mail-art network - called for people from all over to mail bricks to MOMA. So the museum was receiving all these packages of bricks, and it's definitely a statement. (Of course, mail-artists aren't like that anymore :) Right now, the Fluxus bucks can be read as a statement about economic conditions and political response, but of course it has other possibilities as well. I'm amazed to see who is and has been involved. Just great stuff, thanks again.
