RECEIVED: 3 X Mim Golub Scalin - Asemics 16 Mail-Art Book Contributor (Richmond, Virginia, USA)

Mail-art by IUOMA member Mim Golub Scalin (Richmond, Virginia, USA)

July 1, 2011 - Mim Golub Scalin is an excellent IUOMA friend and an accomplished collage artist who has passed on techniques and tips to many of us.

Mim is participating in the Mail-Art 365 project and seems to be holding up well under the discipline of producing at least one piece of mail-art per day; indeed, I think she is exceeding her goal. The bottom card was mailed by Mim from France and the other two from Richmond, Virginia. The reverse side has additional information and some great stamps and notes:

The mail-art has a weathered look as the result of passing through the postal system, or maybe it's because I'm still scraping crunchy peanut butter and strawberry jelly from the scanner bed after a visit from Dark wall.

It's fascinating for me to see work by the artists participating in the Asemics 16 collaborative book project. These pieces by Mim are not intended for the book, but I can see a shift in focus toward language, text, and vispo.

Cheryl Penn (South Africa) and I host the IUOMA Asemic Writing for Mail-Artists group. Four book projects are going on, and there is still room for new participants. Yes, you are invited! You can also enroll in the Martha Stuart School of Asemic Wallpaper. Lots of fascinating asemic writing by artists across the globe is posted there too:

The very top artwork by Mim in this blog is definitely asemic and reflects the direction Mim is taking: She has approached asemic writing very seriously and thoughtfully. I am looking forward to receiving her chapters.

This work by Mim has a very economic or even sparse quality, an idea certainly present in art for a long time but rekindled among us by Eduardo Cardoso (Portugal) and his Minimal Mail-Art group at the IUOMA. Minimal Mail-Art is an interesting and fun IUOMA group:

Thanks as ever Mim! Much asemic writing coming your way.

Using an existing alphabet and then altering it, seems very asemic to me. Mim does a beautiful job with printed text...altered...and it looks like her contribution for Asemic16 will be great! Bravo Mim!

Yip, I very much like what she's doing - creating asemic writing using the alphabet as a foundation. The results aren't recognizable - it's an interesting version of cut-up and applies her collage skills.

Hey DVS - I have been watching Mims contributions to the Asemic books and am REALLY looking forward to getting her work. The psy-chick is back? Excellent!
