PLANT AND SEED – A Poetic Network of Growth
From September 1st to October 3rd, 2019, the KUNST SCHAU FENSTER in Burgdorf became a living archive of artistic planting through the international art project PLANT AND SEED, initiated and curated by Lars Schumacher. Far more than a conventional exhibition, it was conceived as a social sculpture—a growing and evolving artistic ecosystem, shaped by nature, creativity, and collaboration.
The Concept: Artists from across the globe were invited to “plant a tree or seed something beautiful,” to create art inspired by that act, and to document it with plant type, date, and geographic coordinates. More than 150 such gestures were submitted, transforming symbolic acts of growth into artworks and dispatches of hope sent to Burgdorf for public display.
Global Voices: The exhibition presented 15 creative positions from countries including the USA, Canada, Argentina, Spain, Italy, Turkey, Taiwan, Japan, and Germany. Each contribution offered a unique reflection on sustainability, beauty, and transformation—through mediums ranging from collage to mail art, drawing to poetic text.
Featured Artists:
Ali Asker Bal (Turkey) channels Anatolian traditions into contemporary abstraction.
Beşir Bayar (Turkey) explores the quiet tension between figure and space.
Sabela Baña (Spain) crafts visual poetry—her art reads like color-soaked verse.
Mirta Caccaro (Italy) merges woodcut and ceramics into tactile folklore.
Susan Gold (Canada/USA) reflects on botanical themes through mixed media, often questioning nature’s place in institutional display.
Rosa Gravino (Argentina) weaves lightness and lyricism into artist books and mail art.
Aaron Morgan (USA) creates dreamy pieces on recycled card, evoking faded memory.
Darja Mrdjen and Maya Lopez Muro (Italy) offer abstract compositions that drift between reverie and reality.
Keiichi Nakamura (Japan) distills ideas into visual haikus—each collage a poetic gesture.
Niniji contributes meditative and playful works that invite quiet reflection.
Lars and Susanne Schumacher (Germany) are both curators and contributors, anchoring the dialogue in the local space.
Sait Toprak and İbrahim Yildiz (Turkey) round out the show with symbolic, contemplative artworks.
An Open Window to the World: The works were visible 24/7 in the heart of Burgdorf, democratically accessible to passersby, neighbors, and curious minds. The KUNST SCHAU FENSTER became not only an exhibition space, but a stage for global dialogue.
A Lasting Impression: PLANT AND SEED is not just an event—it’s a promise. A promise that art and nature grow stronger together, and that small gestures of beauty can ripple far beyond their planting. Through this project, Lars Schumacher has sown a poetic declaration—a call for interconnectedness, wonder, and creation.
