Karnival of Trash Mail Art Call: DKitsch by Stan Askew (Pasadena, California, USA)

Mail art by IUOMA member Stan Askew (Pasadena, California, USA)

September 8, 2016 - Whether by intention or a lucky twist of fate – as they say – this piece received recently from collage master Stan Askew adds further depth to the Karnival of Trash Exhibition.

Stan Askew’s work often has a Post-Pop vibe in addition to complex symbol systems. This piece reflects elements of an aspect of Trashpo that has never been adequately discussed: The “trashy art” or kitsch wing. Diane Keys’ Museum of Bad Mail Art (MOBMA), while not necessarily associated with Trashpo, does show the interest in “bad art” (in addition to anti-art).

Many have discovered discussions of “bad” vs. “good” art are akin to a greased pig catching contest. (And why not have a greased pig contest at the Karnival of Trash?). But I do not believe the long overdue treatise upon DKitsch is appropriate for the Karnival. I will save that for another time. Rather, I encourage the appreciation of Stan Askew’s marvelous mail art and meditation upon the concept of DKitsch.
