My daughter, Charlotte, has a big love affair with Japanese culture; she plays a lot of Japanese video games, and is a huge fan of manga & anime. I don't know much about their history, but I think I remember reading about a long period where they closed themselves off from the rest of the world. There's a name for that, but I don't remember what it is. You see that kind of thing on a small scale in America, people shut themselves off from their neighbors and withdraw into their own homes and families.
