Pepys ["peeps] is one of the most interesting persons in history, in my opinion. Imagine the discipline of working all day and then spending the evening writing about what had transpired, for years, decades on end.
In November of 1997, I visited the bookseller, Simon Finch, just off Bond Street in London and spent half an afternoon poring over the many offerings. In the first room there were early printings of Dickens noted and then, over an hour later, I spotted almost a couple of dozen 19th Century volumes which constituted an abridged version of Pepys' writings.
After a couple of hours, I found a slim book, bound in pigskin covers which purported to be Medieval illustrations. The book was printed in the latter half of the 1700s, but with colored illustrations. The font replicated what would have been the hand-lettering of a scribe of several hundred years earlier. The price was £70, which at the time was $100 US.
When I triumphantly took my selection to the counter, the staff member looked at the title, the price and then started looking about at printed lists and anything he could find in the computer inventory. After excusing himself, he dashed off to continue researching my find, finally returning after almost 10 minutes stating, "You've found yourself a bargain." I told him that I was surprised to see that it wasn't 2-3 times higher in price. It remains one of my best treasures even though I've owned Medieval manuscripts dating back to the 1200s (Paris, et environs). Cherry picking at the shop of an internationally recognized bibliophile is not easy!
One wonders if the printed creations of Alan Brignull will be treasured and regarded as keenly in the years to come.
