THE ONE THOUSAND PEACE CRANE GOAL HAS BEEN REACHED AS OF 1/6/12. (PLEASE DO NOT SEND ANY MORE PEACE CRANES.)
Thank you to everyone who made peace cranes!
There's a story told in Japan that if you make a thousand origami Peace Cranes, you or someone you love will be healed. This group is for those who wish to make an origami Peace Crane which will then be sent to the Hiroshima Peace Museum.

Video of the Peace Crane event at my local library. People came to learn to make cranes and to string all of the ones that IUOMA members have made and sent for this project!
An elderly gentleman stopped at the library with several cranes and a story. He and his wife made cranes for many years; she folded and he strung. His wife died this year, and so when he saw the story about our project, he gathered up some of the cranes they had made and brought them in, along with this card that tells the story of the peace crane in Japan.
no need to say that i really like your project :-) i keep repeating myself. it's beautiful! also for its inspiring meaning ...thank your for the kind comment and the post.
and congratulations on the successful event at the library! i wish you another hit for october...looking forward to the video and photos. cheers!
Last week, I posted the flyer mentioning the gathering that would be at my local library for the purpose of making and stringing peace cranes as part of this project. It was a wonderful turnout, many people came, some enjoyed learning how to make cranes for the first time. Children came and spent their time stringing all of the peace cranes made by IUOMA members. In all, about 100 new cranes also were made. In conjunction with Japanese tradition, the cranes were strung 40 to a string, and there are now 12 full strings.
The event was so successful that the library staff have decided to continue the project throughout the month of October - inviting people to continue to drop by to make cranes and string them. Members here at IUOMA who wish to make more cranes are invited to do so. We still need around 500 cranes before we can send them to the Hiroshima Peace Museum. I will be posting some pictures and video of the event next week. Stay tuned.
Everyone who dropped by the library today were amazed at all the cranes made by IUOMA members. Many of the public had never encountered mailart before so they were very curious to see the collages and envelopes that all of you made using personal stamps, drawings, etc. So many of the children were thrilled with the cranes that you made with maps, pages from foreign magazines... in all, just a really fun learning experience for everyone involved, including the library staff! Stay tuned for photos and video.
