Great!

Let the mail-art flow to the address!

i've finally posted my Chinese address in the discussion. excitedly await arrivals and will keep the group posted on what makes it here.

i'm interested to see if they'll let more experimental things make it to me. perhaps some could send handmade envelope/postcard, over/undersized, or otherwise curiously presented items (just dashing off something quick for the sake of experiment, so time and labour isn't much lost if it doesn't arrive).

i sent out batch 2 yesterday of "outbound" Mail Attack. it was Songjiang's first snow, so everyone was feeling a bit whimsical. they let everything pass, including a squished and decorated candy box. wonder how far the snow-struck glee will carry it....?

best to all,

ejva

(....participate)?

Amo, i wonder if we could dovetail these mailart projects in Shanghai, or (and) if you know Chinese mailartists who would take part?

took my first batch of mailings to the post today, to see what Songjiang, China would allow me to send.

here is a detail of the various things sent, and the outcome:

decorated envelopes:
PASS!
painted, with stickers, with 2-D collage.

'readymades' (quick postcards made from printed cardboard etc): FAIL!
there was a fair amount of affable bewilderment as all the postal workers passed them around and examined them. finally after much conferring amongst themselves, the lass at the counter painstakingly spelled out for me 'this is not a postcard'. not wishing to quibble semantics over 'post' and 'card', i put them in the crisp white envelope they provided.

after the readymades failed, i rightly guessed that anything more experimental wouldn't have a chance. the 3-D collage, resealable packagings stuffed with other stuff, and all other attempts to improvise a postcard were committed to envelope. one of them, featuring a dead insect, was refused in all forms.

summarily, it seems that one can decorate their mail as much as they wish, provided it's on a 'proper, official' (ie retail) postcard or envelope.

my next plan of Mail Attack is to purchase commercially-made postcards and see how far i can get away with altering them. i'll also try a post station downtown - this one is on the outskirts of the city, and i'm curious if location will make a difference.

please give me a comment if you'd like me to mail you something in experiment round 2!
