m.a. arrived from Stephen recently -
In my reply to Stephen, I remarked how this threw me because, besides the fact of it being a beautiful piece visually, it had such an astoundingly warm and particular personal touch - of he to me - just this communication, just this moment: between us. It's difficult to explain, but there was something very powerful in it. I now note that Janine Weiss had a like experience upon receiving a piece of Stephen's exceedingly eloquent work. It makes one feel, frankly, special - that he took this time and created something so distinctly for you from him. It is magical indeed, and forges an intimacy of relation that is quite exquisite...
This "personal" sense was ramified by the fact that I ADORE Frank Lloyd Wright's "Falling Water." It is an exceedingly special place to me, one to which I take a "pilgrimage" every year for my birthday. I wrote him about the experience and meaning of FW to me, in a rather immediate gushing, as it were. His MA seemed to have invited...
I found his approach extremely interesting in terms of the letter/envelope tradition also. When one sends postcards, the message is usually rather impersonal; when one writes a letter it is enclosed in an envelope, protecting and signifying the personal and/or intimate nature of the contents. This was a postcard, and yet felt like a letter; and that feeling resided in much more than the literal words - every image and element was part of the letter/communication. Silly maybe, but this seemed rather brash & daring in a strange way - I found it exciting, charming & titillating indeed!
Thank you so much for your wondrous work Stephen! Simply: beautiful!

Hello Claire,
Thank you for your kind words. I'm glad that you are enjoying the postcard. I do the best I can to trust my intuition and create something that the person I'm sending to might enjoy. In your case, this postcard was especially unique for me because I was born in PA & have fond memories of roadtrips & visiting family. Reading about your pilgrimage to Frank Lloyd Wrights' Falling Water home design is so cool. My goal is to create mail art, even if they at times include unintentional mistakes, that makes people smile. Every project is a new opportunity to learn, travel via mail art & connect. As I make a postcard, I see it with my eyes, but it's so much more interesting to view it through another person's eyes. Your "place holder" comments make me feel good. It's great to see World Peace is alive & well.
Take your time with a reply. I know life is busy for everyone.
Stephen
