George Brecht

(August 27, 1926. - December 5, 2008

Hello Fluxus friends

This is a small newsletter

concerning George Brecht

who just left us

George Brecht is the artist

in the world who's attitude towards art

got me thinking

and changed my mind

in other words influenced me the most.

at the time in 1962

I was interested in " the limits of art "

I had met Yves Klein (the monochrome)

Manzoni (shit in art)

and knew about Duchamp's Ready Made

So when Maciunas in 1962 in London

said to me :

There is someone in New York called George Brecht

whose work also contains a limit in art

I said : what does he do?

Maciunas answered :

He blinks or just shakes your hand or closes a door.

or even just leaves a chair in a corner

you can't tell if it is a work of art or just a chair

I remember being taken so aback

that I decided to go to New York

and meet this incredible George Brecht

that is what I did

in 1964 I saw him on Canal Street

it was a concert at Maciunas loft

Brecht arrived

seat at the piano

the lights went out.

in the dark Brecht left the piano

the light came back

the piano was all alone

Brecht was gone

in those times as even now

it was my habit to compare and classify what I saw

I put Brecht straight away with Duchamp and John Cage

the top three

Very far in front of all the others Pop :

new realist , Arte Povera artists etc

Why? the others compared to Brecht

Are just decoration and ego

a simple white chair against this wall close to the door,

in my kitchen when I think :

that it is George Brecht

it reduces all other works of art on the wall,

just to esthetical decorations

BUT WHY STILL DO I CONSIDER GEORGE BRECHT SO IMPORTANT?

Because I believe as Robin Page said

He is the only man who can walk on snow without leaving a trace

WHY DO I CONSIDER GEORGE BRECHT SO IMPORTANT?

Because

"Water Yam", the main work of Brecht, contains "events"

and the Brecht event is a kind of frontier line between art and life

simplicity, details, etc in art

BUT WHY STILL DO I CONSIDER GEORGE BRECHT SO IMPORTANT?

Because

In 1961 at Martha Jackson in New York

there was a show with all the Pop of the time and Brecht, a table, two chairs and deck of cards his piece went partially unnoticed but 40 years after contains rupture and not variation

Why do I consider George Brecht so important?

WHY STILL DO I CONSIDER GEORGE BRECHT SO IMPORTANT?

Because when 30 year's later Beaubourg Museum wanted to acquire Brecht his instructions were of going with the BHV (retail shop) or elsewhere,

buy a coat rack a red waxed coat to pose them some where in the museum

WHY DO I CONSIDER GEORGE BRECHT SO IMPORTANT?

Because his attitude towards art does not contain the classical

art ego duo

or I would say try's a much as possible to put it aside

GEORGE BRECHT I REMEMBER

I REMEMBER

George and Filliou oppening la Cédille qui sourit

and when I gave a show they close the door and put a sign : we are at the bar

I REMEMBER

George telling me "You can illustrate the Water Yam

chair by putting two loaf of bread on it and send me 900 euros"

I REMEMBER

the day a gallery was coming to meet him in Villefranche

he just diseapeard and nobody could find him

JE ME SOUVIENS

JE ME RAPPELLE

JE ME SOUVIENS

mes meilleures idées il m'avait dit : si tu as 19 idées

et que tu n'en gardes qu'une seule, c'est celle là la bonne.

JE ME SOUVIENS

JE ME RAPPELLE (annie)

JE ME SOUVIENS (annie)

JE ME SOUVIENS (annie)

RESUMONS
