Received: Techno-Vispo Mail-Art from Satu Kaikkonen (Vesilahti, Finland)

Mail-art by IUOMA member Satu Kaikkonen (Vesilahti, Finland)

December 18, 2010 - Satu Kaikkonen is a versatile and gifted visual poet who shares her work through the mail-art network. I put the word "techno" in the blog title because this beautiful piece Satu sent me is an excellent example of the work that is being done using technology instead of pure reliance on scissors, paper, and glue. Both "Old School" and new media approaches are yielding tremendous results these days; rather than being in any kind opposition to each other, these two approaches to composition in truth overlap. Satu's piece is an example of vispo that uses elements of of text to create a structure that integrates visual arts elements and writing. She added some nice material on the address side too. Test Tower recently posted some work by Satu on his blog that uses music notation. I've also seen work by Reed Altemus and Marie Wintzer using music notation. A great idea:

A while back Ginny Lloyd posted some interesting material about vispo and concrete poetry here at the IUOMA. Richard Kostelanetz gave a fascinating talk in Florida about vispo that no longer uses textual elements at all. Clearly possibilities are more open than ever for mail-artists and others who want to work in this area. Thank you for the mail-art, Satu
