These three sketches show the progress of building up tonal variations. The many mid-tones are challenging, as I strive to show the definition between the forms using a narrow range of tones. In addition there is a dark mass in the lower left hand corner which needs balancing. By adding a human form to the composition and by avoiding too much detail in the face, a ghostly atmosphere and sense of history is invoked.
