New Asemics by Jim Leftwich & the Aldous Huxley Correspondance School (Roanoke, Virginia, USA)

Jim - 4.3.2015 - 1

Mail art by IUOMA member Jim Leftwich (Roanoke, Virginia, USA)

April 4, 2015 - I am thrilled to be able to share with you asemic writing on a set of six cards sent to me by Jim Leftwich. Here is a view of three of the cards:

For me, these pieces have an abstract expressionist association, some of which is due to the overlaying of color. The work also expresses an improvised, spontaneous quality sometimes found in automatic writing. Here is a detail shot:

This asemic writing offers a direct link to the unconscious where visual and textual images surface, meld, dissipate and reform always suggesting an emerging coherence but never, finally, resolving into meaning. Actual letters, parts of words and/or words can be identified, yet are wavering and indeterminate. Here are the reverse sides of the first three cards:

The pieces also take an anti-art stance and have some similarity to street art. Thus comparison to the aesthetics of abstract painting is limited; we are, after all, in the realm of writing and text. A sense of movement is present throughout. Here are the other three cards:

If it is possible to make a distinction between asemic writers who take a formalist or classical approach and those who have roots in a Romantic sensibility, Jim Leftwich would be linked to the latter. I am very pleased to be able to share these pieces by Jim, an outstanding visual poet, who has made important contributions to the current asemic writing movement.
