Thanks for your poem. Being a bear of simple mind, I can't pretend to understand it. I'll send tyou something back soon though. Thanks again, Val

Don't get me wrong - I like a lot of Langpo as well. There was a little tension at the beginning. I was telling JMB: I actually first learned about Bernstein's L=A=N=G=U=A=G-E through the m-a network. He was trying to sell subscriptions. No one at the time had any idea what would come of it.

Sheila Murphy I definitely first started reading in the 1980s zines that traveled through the network. I would guess that's how she started.

(ohh, think i'll toot my own horn here DVS - check out the track by "Esther Bowinkle" in the "Aural" section in the last issue (link below). "Esther" was my stage name. )

Indeed! But, personally, I do like a lot of langpo (peter ganick for instance). Get what you're sayin' though... Can't recall how I discovered Sheila, but I adore her work! I have quite an SM library...

Check out the feature on poet Kathleen Fraser if so inclined. I bought my first books of hers when I was 16 or 17 ('78/79), so doing this was a dream come true pour moi (though TONS of work!)

The zine was a lot of fun - my 1st venture into web design when I got a decent comp in '98 and saw all the new creative avenues this media/um could facilitate. I met a lot of great writers/artists through it, but it was just sooo much work (literately - I put in 2-4 months an issue designing each contributors page separately at 1st!) I did just web art/design for over a decade, but missed getting my hands dirty, as it were... So here we are iuoma/ma!

Snazzy design work there, Claire. You have a lot of interesting people in that issue. Excellent, IMHO.

I found Sheila Murphy, really admire her work, and you have Miekal And too. I guess folks have settled on calling that Otherstream, and it certainly came out of or at least was distributed through the mail-art network. As much as I identify with a lot of those writers, a failing is that it's so male-centered. Sheila is a marvelous exception.

I've always felt Otherstream never got a fair hearing, as it was unfortunately flattened by Langpo (saw you had Johanna Drucker in there too) as the strategy of Langpo that rubbed so many the wrong way back in the day was to level everything in its path using a Stalinist roadmap. Everyone is looking like long lost friends these days all the same.

Great, relevant link!

Indeed DVS!
I got one of these also - amazing! Love it love it love it!

btw DVS - I used to edit & design a New Media E-zine called "cauldron & net." In issue II (well over a decade ago) I did a feature on Sheila.

If you're interested, click her name here (I designed it for an 800px monitor, so it looks f*cked on a big one, nonetheless...

Wow, that's real Otherstream stuff - like JMB, Jesus Jim, Lannie Quarles, Sheilah Murphy, Fike - excellent, IMHO.
