Here are some examples of jam ATCs:

These are between me and Steve Hodges - Row 1: Steve made the ATC on the left and I added to it to make the ATC on the right. Row 2: I made the ATC on the left and Steve added to it to make the ATC on the right.

JAM SESSION 2009

A Special Project of ATC Exchange

Welcome to the 2009 ATC Jam Session

HOST: Carla Cryptic (carlacryptic@yahoo.com)

WHY: The ATC Exchange loves ATC Jams and would like to invite you to
participate in this fun event. The participants will make original ATCs for other participants to add to and the results of these ATC 'Jams' will be scanned and shown in a group exhibition at the ATC Exchange site. I've hosted an event like this before and it was a wonderful challenge with extremely satisfying results. It's a good way to get to know the work of other ATC makers as well as a good way to try new things, break out of a rut, and/or see what someone else's ideas inspire in you.

THEME: No theme - anything goes but keep it clean.

HOW IT WORKS: First, participants will sign up. Depending on number of participants, Jam Session may be divided into groups. There could be as few as one group or as many as are needed to accommodate everyone who is interested. We won't be rigid about numbers but, instead, we will try to make each group a good size logistically. We will post how many ATCs for each person to make once we know how many people are playing. But you can start making cards right after you sign up assuming 10 participants.

Each participant will make 2 ATCs for each of the other participants in his or her group. So, if we end up with groups of 10, each person in a group would make 20 ATCs. You could make 10 each of two designs or 20 different ATC designs. At this point, you will know how many to make, but not who the other people in your group are. This is to add some variety, mystery, and surprise! People tend to trade with the same people over and over again but it's fun to break out of that pattern for an event like this.

Participants will send all of their ATCs to me for scanning and redistribution. To facilitate this and make it less of a burden on me financially, please include $6 US ($11 US for Mexico or Canada, $13 US for all other countries) to cover postage and supplies. This is for mailing the cards out to everyone in the first place and then mailing the completed cards out to everyone via priority mail in their own ATC binder pages. Priority mail includes tracking and insurance. I will have all of the names and addresses and will send out 2 ATCs from each participant to each of the other people in his or her group.

Once participants receive ATCs from me, they will have two weeks to
add to the ATCs and two weeks to get them back to me completed, altogether one month. At that point, I'll scan the results and redistribute the cards - each person will receive one card they initiated and one card they added to from each other person in their group. So, if you are in a group of 10, you will receive 20 cards back, 10 of which you started and someone else added to and 10 of which someone else initiated and you completed. When they have all come back to me, I will post scans of the originals as well as the completed cards, showing who worked on which cards and in which order.

I hope you will consider this event whether you are new to making ATCs
or an old hat at it. ATC Jams are a great way to spark creativity in people who are just starting out and to inspire us all over again if we have been making ATCs for years. There is nothing like seeing how another person thinks and having something tangible to jump off from to boost the creative juices.
