I Was a Bone of Contention (no bone to pick) - from Cheryl Penn

Bone (n.) 1. The dense, semirigid, porous, calcified connective tissue forming the major portion of the skeleton of most vertebrates. It consists of a dense organic matrix and an inorganic, mineral component.

One fine day a mad but oh so talented woman in South Africa decided to make a book of bones. This has to be one of the greatest books ever made. Check it out again on Cheryl's blog, it is very much worth the trip:

a book on the run

After months of hard work Cheryl is dismantling the bone boekie and is sending it as mail art all over the world, which is something I really admire, I feel privileged to possess such a unique piece of art.

The back of the card is a photo showing a detail of the book's pages being made. The home made paper came out so thick and earthy and textured, it feels like a piece of fossilized soil preciously conserved in an archaeologist's lab.

I was a bone of contention

I was a bone

I was...

No bone of contention over this piece, a bone a fide FAB! Dankie vir 'n duisend keer Cheryl.

PS: Just one thing, I couldn't read most of what was written on the envelope and I would like to know what it says. Can anyone help with semi-asemic writing? :-))

Great work, Cheryl and great blog, Marie. I especially like the way you described the quality of the hand-made paper.
