This was the latest piece that I received from Susan. You can see that the postal machinery left a date mark on the "art" side of the mail piece (17 February 2016).   As it happens, I just sent Susan a new mail art piece last week—a knit mail art piece elegy for the Orlando Pulse Club victims. Not knowing the exact date of Susan's passing, I do not know if she received/witnessed the piece or not. It hasn't been returned, so perhaps her family or loved ones were able to receive it.

The pieces I received from Susan always shocked me with their surrealism (as the piece above did). Although crafted with an artful and professional hand, there was always some deeper knowledge contained in them that I felt a little ashamed to be viewing...somehow.

The world of Mail Art has lost a great contributor to the genre and the form. I heave a sorrowful sigh for yet another lost friend. Thanks for this blog space remembrance, Jay...

Susan will be so dearly missed,

and I, too, have an envelope addressed for mailing tomorrow,

'will send it with condolences to her family.

It was haunting when she announced that she was ill and would not be sending out anymore mail art. Very very sad. I hope her family is doing okay. I loved her distinctive and unwavering style--red black white--synonymous with Susan McAllister.  A bit more haunting is that I have an envelope addressed to her in my pile of people to send to.
