Gothic Minimalism by Lisa Iversen aka Skybridge Studios (North Manchester, Indiana, USA)

Mail-art by Lisa Iversen aka Skybridge Studios (North Manchester, Indiana, USA)

July 3, 2014 - Although currently not active on the IUOMA-Ning platform, many members will remember, no doubt with fondness, Lisa Iversen aka Skybridge Studios. What a pleasant surprise to receive correspondence – albeit minimal and a bit ominous – from Lisa! Indeed, the physics of the Eternal Network involves constantly changing configurations of people; but that does not exclude remembering friends and perhaps re-connecting.

Always inventive and sometimes a bit cryptic, I am intrigued by this post-card-size work she sent. On the panel where one reasonably expects to find art, we are faced instead with black blankness. Ray Johnson was preoccupied with “nothings,” and Lisa Iversen, perhaps, is echoing that concept and giving us a respite from the constant image bombardment that has become the normal state of 21st century life. Beyond symbolic denotations and connotations derived from black, the work is blissfully indeterminate.

Among many other talents, Lisa Iversen has been known to produce some very fine calligraphy, as seen above.

The Skybridge Studios stamp supports what could be interpreted as the gothic tone of the work, adding to its mysterious qualities. I certainly an tickled to receive communication from Lisa. Many thanks!
