2nd International Manhole Cover Day-- Saturday 31 May, 2025

 

It's the time of the year to yet again raise global awareness of Manhole Covers. 

They are largely ignored even though we walk, drive and cycle over them every day. 

And so on the 2nd International Manhole Cover Day -- Saturday 31 May -- please send me a photo of a Manhole Cover near your house, apartment, villa, ranch, tent or château.

 

They are everywhere, so you won't have to  go far to  find one near chez vous.

Lots of them can be seen in the pages of the Manhole Cover Lovers Group. Join it! The more members the better.

 

A photo exhibition featuring these Manhole Covers will be held in the South of France later this year.

That's a great project, and I hope yuo find lots more dated MHCs.

Some questions:

i) did this series only start in 1991 or was it going before then?

ii) why do Athens MHCs have dates on them?

iii) what happpens, if, in any given year -- say 1992 -- they don't have enough MHCs in stock? Can they use earlier ones, or even the ones they have ordered for 1993?

iv) and if they have ordered but not used too many for a given year -- say 1992 again -- can they use them in 1993?

What you are doing led me to dig out Tom Phillips book 'The Postcard Century: 2000 cards and their messages.' The century runs from 1900 to 1999, and the book has 2000+ postcards. The link with your MHCs is that for each and every year Phillips includes a different postcard of Piccadily Circus in London (it was not at all easy for him to track down different ones for each year), and one of the NY City skyline (a much easier task). That accounts for 200 postcards, and the remaining 1800 are from here, there and everywhere. It's a great book!
