Why I am involved in Mail-Art:
It was a helluva lot of fun exchanging artwork with artists around the world without having to deal with galleries or museums. That is until the US Postal System got a bug up it's ass and set strict regulations on what could be sent through the mail.

By the way, I just donated the bulk of my Mail Art collection to Artpool in Budapest, Hungary (Julia & Gyorgy Galantai).
