Why I am involved in Mail-Art:

I love to send and receive hand painted, hand drawn, printmaking [silkscreen, intaglio, lithography, etc.], artist trading cards (ATCs), zines and hand-bound books. Please include "IUOMA" and your online / screen name so I know who to send back to if it is different from your account name. Please no Sharpie or permanent markers, the ink is unstable and rapidly degrades. Please do not fold original art works. I always try to send out interesting things and my very best work. Please do not rush to mail back to me; I would rather wait a year than get something rushed out of a feeling of obligation.

Please note, Chicago mail delivery is very bad! Wrapping interior art in an envelope with plastic or waxed paper helps. Mail is delivered on foot through the rain, snow and ice storms on foot and sometimes my mail gets wet. Any item over 1/4 inch thick can be destroyed by mass sorting mail machines.

Earthling, this is the last but certainly not the least welcome message to IUOMA you receive. I’m a celestial mail artist living in a heavenly corner of the faraway universe called Republik van Patland. When you joined IUOMA on March 26 I was unable to welcome you on board.  At the time I was in a Celestial Journey far beyond the Milky Way. Now, back to planet Earth, I´d love to be the other end if you wish to trade mail art with a celestial mail artist. If this is the case at the time your envelope should read as follows:

    The Celestial Scribe

    Terrene Embassy

    Republik van Patland

    Caixa Postal 24827

    Curitiba-PR

    80510-970

    Brazil

I look forward to see a piece of yours in our terrene mailbox. I´ll do my homework after receiving your artwork. This is nothing less than a Celestial Promise. I’m Patricio, Celestial Scribe & Republik van Patland Official Envelope Provider.

  • Patricio - The Celestial Scribe

I'm always making art but no one wants my huge paintings... ^.^' At least I have places to send my work now!  Certainly Republik van Patland, where this scribe lives is one of those places where, as today, your art is highly appreciated.  It´s time for this scribe to do homework.  I´ll keep you posted

I just sent something your way.

Hi Shellie!  Sorry it took a few days to reply to your question, but here is my solution: matte medium and heavy books.  I have tried a number of adhesives with paper and the matte medium does the least amount of curling and wrinkling.  Once it dries, I place the item under a heavy stack of books for a couple days (sometimes a week or so).    I hope this helps.  ;)

  • Tiffany Bahan

Where do you find the label glue and stickflat paste?  Do you go to a craft store or order online?

  • Tiffany Bahan

I just realized I haven't said thank you for the mail art you sent. Duh! It's awesome, and I love fish (but I don't like eating fish).  I have a 55 gal aquarium for freshwater fish in my living room.

  • Tiffany Bahan

    Thanks for the tip, Shellie!

  • Sheri Rice

Hi Shellie.  I'm sending you something in the mail.  Hope you like it.

Thank you for sending the link. Enjoy Monday!

Your mail art arrived. I took a photo of the contents and blogged it on the site.

Thank you so much! The artist book was great, I particularly liked the photo of the derelict building.

I will be working on something for you this week and will let you know when I post it.

  • Nina Hermus

Twinchies: look at the Arty Slides International Group here. It seems that your Twinchies are similiar to the 35mm slides that we use for Mail art purposes.

If you look at my web-site www.val-herman-art. eu then the 'Slide Art' section, you'll see a number of ideas I've had and Arty Slides I've made and exhibited. End of advert

  • Valentine Mark Herman

Thanks. I don't think the terminology would work with centimeters though

  • E Coles

    Hi Shellie,

I sent you mail art on 21st August (I keep a record book!!). Has it arrived yet? I have had a few piece go missing this summer, so if it doesn't arrive by the end of the week let me know and I'll send you something else.

    Hi Shellie,

I like your idea of your students exchanging artist cards with my students,

My students will be very happy to exchange mails with students in your school. i have always thought of that, because even writing letters improves learning and broadens the minds of children. It is a great idea, perhaps your students can come to Ghana for culture exchange too :)

Here is my email for you dotsiisu@gmail.com

    my skype id is  dotsiisu

I hope to hear from you

    Sisu :)

    Hi Shellie,

I received your mail art (laser cut shark and giant squid). Thank you very much, and sorry it has taken me so long to let you know that it arrived.

I have something ready to send to you and hope to get down to the post office next week.

    Emily.

The tragedy of people posting photos of Basset Hounds running....and the joy that they must have in doing so.

(Sometimes I wonder not just why people -- in this case Basset Hound owners -- bother to make and post such photos -- but also why non-Basset Hound owners -- in this case, most definitely me -- get drawn into looking at them. And then I think, well Basset Hound owners must have similiar thoughts about Mail Artists -- in this case, us)

  • Michele K. Henderson

    Hi Shellie,

I'm not sure why you are having trouble seeing Douglas' address, but maybe this will help you. Click on the tab that says "members" at the top of the page. Then, it the white search box on the left, type in the name Douglas Galloway, then click on the magnifying box icon. His photo and name will come up, and underneath it reads United States. Click on either the photo OR the name, which is in red, and it will bring you to Douglas' page. Scroll about 5 or 6 inches and you will see a big white box with all of his contact information there for you. You can search for any member of IUOMA there. Hope this helps!

  • Valentine Mark Herman

It must be difficult being a male basset hound if, when you run, your ears and balls bounce along the ground. Perhaps that's why they don't run vey often?

  • MUSEUM OF MAIL ART

    yes, it's me
