Why I am involved in Mail-Art:
Invited by a IUOMA member to check out the org because I am currently exhibiting my first three Mail-Art works at the Richmond Art Gallery (RAG) in Richmond, B.C., Canada. I've been doing ATCs since 2003 & belong to an active group based in Shawville, Quebec. This past November I was invited to exhibit my woodblock prints, collage and other works at a group show held at a Shawville gallery. Thrilling. I am intrigued with Mail-Art, and would like to participate in the free exploration of art/mediums/creativity which both ATCs and Mail-Art represent.

    Dear ,

    Welcome to IUOMA!

It's a great bunch of folks and I hope that you enjoy exchanging Mail Art with us. I'm your Mentor, and if I can help to ease you into IUOMA in any way, then please don't hesitate to ask and I'll try to explain what's going on and how IUOMA works.

If you haven't already done so, I suggest you take a look at the 'New to IOUMA' page (4th from the left at the top of the IUOMA home page) where you'll find a 10-point Introductory Guide that should give you an insight as to what is going on.

Would you like to exchange some Mail Art with me? If so, send me something to 1 Rue de la Vieille Fontaine, F-11130 Sigean, France, and I PROMISE to send you something back.

If you want to receive some Mail Art from me, or anyone else, you'll have to post your Mail-Address on Your Page.

Hoping you enjoy your IUOMA days, and Best Wishes for 2012.

Regards, Val Herman  (who once spent an acedmic year at Carleton U, Ottawa: weather-wise it was the most miserable year of my life, although I enjoyed those bits of ontario and Quebec that I saw.)

Bonjour! Yes let's start with cats. (There are 2 cat groups in existence: you might want to join one or both of them.) I will tell my 2 cats, Bianca and Trouble, that we will all be receiving some mail. They will be pleased.

As to the size of mail Art, well it's really determined by what the post office will accept in Canada. I receive things in all shapes and sizes -- standard size envelopes and postcards, bigger and smaller than standard size ones, home made  envelopes, etc. I'm even conducting an experiment with a French guy to see exactly what we can send through the post -- bits to date include round wooden tops from camembert cheese boxes, DVD boxes, 45 rpm vinyl records, over- and under-sized envelopes, incorrectly addressed pieces so that we can get 'return to sender' labels, etc.

A really fascinating Mail Artist here who sends all sorts of weird and wonderful things through the post is Dean Marks. You should check his Page...and even be-friend him.

Stick to 5 x 5 if you're comfortable with it. One decision to take is -- card or envelope? if the former, then you have 2 sides of a card to illustrate: if the latter, you have two sides of the envelope, AND, if you choose, whatever you put in it.

Don't be put off by being a newbie. Some folks here have been doing Mail Art for 30+ years, others for 30+ days. It's vall good fun, whatever one's experience (or lack of to date).

    That's all.

    Happy Mail Arting, Val

Bonjour Katherine! Your first ever Mail Art Work & IUOMA piece arrived here safely in France, today. I'm honoured to receive your first one, and hope to get many more. I do like your wood block print. I started lino printing at Xmas, and am going to send you back some bits and pieces. Hope you are surviving the cold spell. We're expecting cold (for us: +3°C) weather this weekend. No skiing here, but the slopes in the Pyreneees are only 2 hours away. Bianca & Trouble s end thir greetings (and art work, too) to Tigger and Misty, and I send my greetings to you. Thanks again & Best Wishes, Val
