Guglielmo Achille Cavellini, also known as GAC (1914 - 1990) was an influential Italian art collector and mail artist.

Cavellini was born into a merchant family in the Province of Brescia, Italy, where he ran a dry-goods shop through the post-war years following World War II.

He produced many reinterpretations of concurrent artistic works, often distributed extensively by mail. He invented the term autostoricizzazione (self-historicization) upon which he acted to create a deliberate popular history surrounding his existence. "In the mountain of documentary material he left behind, Cavellini planted enough sly exaggerations and outright falsehoods to stymie the most intrepid historian" (Vetrocq 1993, referencing interviews with the artist's son, Piero Cavellini). Cavellini even wrote his own encyclopedia entry, the Pagina dell'Enciclopedia

The biography of an artist is frequently written after his death, imperfectly and incompletely. Since I don't want any such biography to be written about me, I've decided to write my own. --GAC

    ROAD TO 2014 (FIVE-YEAR SCHEDULE)

We are getting closer to an event that GAC, in his meticulous work of sectioning artistic iteration formulae of his contemporariness, had established as the final act of the foresighted and systematic path to “self-historicization”, the 2014 centenary celebrations. Such event was meant to be the highest expression of a formula that has proven to be the most complete and exhaustive result of his entire work. We - as an archive currently accommodating the entire work of GAC - turning from custodians into artists are now fully aware of this accomplishment. While still alive, GAC had appointed some official celebrators and even an ambassador with the aim of preparing the event. Also this unique gesture being party of his artistic work that can be interpreted as initiating a work of art to be continued after his passing away. In our opinion, it seems appropriate to start from this point, from this path paved for us by GAC, once again reaching out to all people involved then and everyone who embarked on this adventure over time. Thus we call upon to all “Cavellini” enthusiasts to come together and make this event a success. The Archive shall do all that is within its power to coordinate and complete the project. This is meant to be a roadmap to be implemented over the next five years under the umbrella of “Archivio aperto” (literally Italian for “open archive”) concept available to accommodate ideas and activities, be involved in projects, look for financial contributions aimed at successfully implementing our ideas.

    ACHIEVED RESULTS

We believe to have achieved some results since we took over this task, keeping GAC’s intense activity memory alive. Regardless of the limited resources at our disposal, we have really strived to attain our objectives without losing sight of our goal – restoring his due position in the development of contemporary art – we now strongly believe within our reach. Such acknowledgement still looks bound to encounter hurdles that are still difficult to overcome. We believe it our duty to express gratitude to those who have always been by our side and those that more recently joined us in this reaffirmation task. First and foremost, our thanks go to the “Ambassador” Fausto Paci who, over the last years, has constantly honoured his task of spreading GAC’s message with unrelenting tenacity, pestering the system with his messages. Thanks also go to Ken Damy who took up the task of annually celebrating GAC’s work in his dedicated exhibition area, not forgetting the curators who, going their way out of the mainstream, added GAC’s works in important events, acknowledging its rightful place in history as a key art personality. And more recently, some key market players, who undertook to spread and enhance the works in question. Such aid as well as support from within the Archive, including general cataloguing of the works inexorably under progress, most of GAC’s works seems to have regained its lustre once again. However, there is much more to do. There still remains the need to hold position and conquer more public visibility to create ground suitable to implement his, and now even our, ideas.

    FUTURE PROJECTS

Only five years to go before the big event and we need to keep the pace following the schedule to ensure the occasion attains maximum success and visibility. First and foremost, we need to outline an exhibition plan capable, in the near future, of offering the support required to create awareness and spread the works of this artist. Such project expanding progressively leading to some prestigious museum exhibitions within the next few years. Though the current global financial crises prevent institutions from this type of investments, we are fully pledged to reach our goal. Our aim is that of involving everyone holding a special place for GAC and his work in contemporary thinking, as well as those that want to be part of the conclusive self-driving effort towa
