Just for SQUARES!

There was a prompt from CreativeSprint to make something just using squares. I'd forgotten how I'd learned to love squares while teaching 2D design with Wucius Wong and Josef Albers Interaction of Color (years ago) I thought, Wow, there must be other Square lovers out there. Thanks to Katerina for the name idea.

14.11.20 Dare Ms. Mim G. S.,  ...all best wishes for the"Squares" group ...& as has already been established in numerous writings, the artist Ray Johnson studied with Josef Albers at BMC.  It was also  Ray Johnson that  made the observation that Albers was buried in Orange, Connecticut, Best to all concerned , Rixhard

  • Mim Golub Scalin

Yes! Thank you for your comment. I was fortunate to be in an art history class where Albers was a guest speaker. I was only 18 and had no idea who he was but I loved the slides he showed & remember them so clearly.
  • Katerina Nikoltsou (MomKat)

Albers and the Chicago Art Institute..ah yes, I have memories of the "square" times! Thanks for making this new group, Mim, and thanks for the inspiration...

Red Virus "squared" for holiday greetings :-)

Randomness-drop them and see where they land.

As noted previously, a happy accident on my studio table and a decision to be made, circles or squares - posting in both groups, of course.

     Janus asked

    - Can a square dance?

    This is my answer:

  • Mel Anie

Circles, squares, dance - yes, I'm all in. I was always told to stay away from Janus but....

  • Mail Art Martha

Oh! sorry, Mel Anie, I have given you the idea that 'dancing square' is Janus' current project. I am afraid it is not! But this is

No reason why we could not put it in a square, though, being thrifty.

  • Mel Anie

Haha, Martha, this looks great. I could send him my two faces (or not)!!!!

  • Mim Golub Scalin

I’m so Happy to see more members to this group! I’m as fond of squares as I am circles. Carry on! Be square!
  • Mail Art Martha

Yes MelAnie, it will be brilliant, wish i had thought of it.

  • Mim Golub Scalin

Going through small tins on my work table, I came across the one that I keep old loyalty cards, membership cards, old phone cards from France & Turkey, Remember Phone cards? oh my. I kept them for students to use as burnishers when I gave my collage workshops. I found this one, Malevich, homage to the square, maybe not the title, oh will we ever get up to New York City again, to MoMA?

  • Mel Anie

Mim, I am interested in this phone card burnishing technique. Is it the rounded edge or the straight edge that you use? I have been to York but not the New one.

  • Mim Golub Scalin

Mel Anie, I would have them use the long side to burnish the collages bits onto the background. Ensures, or somewhat ensures, that the bits don’t come off in transit.
  • Mel Anie

    Thanks, Mim.

  • Mim Golub Scalin

I used the "let the squares fall where they may" method, then glued in place. They are Gravity, Direction, and Concentration or Congestion. You decide.

  • Katerina Nikoltsou (MomKat)

    Square selvages, too :-)

Beginning with an old "inchie" hand carved rubber stamp. Then applying 4 impressions on a 2" by 2" square and adding a bit of red.
