I started Nov. 07, sending a work for a call from Greece (by Georgia Gregoriadou). My best friend was the one who insisted me in participating. I didnt realized what was it about (all the mail art thing...) I thought it was just an exhibit over seas...
The funny thing is that when I learn about Mail Art, I just love it, but my friend instead, didnt want to participate anymore... I only wish I did know before about Mail Art, because is inspirational!
I started mail art in 1993 when a fellow artist from the District of Columbia Collage Society told me about it and gave me information on calls. I have never regretted doing this, I have had some wonderful collaborations and made some realfriendships with people who visited me. i never would have had these experiences if not for mail art. As an exhibiting fine artist it is a very demanding lonely field. I do not find the comraderie in the arts that I find in mail art. Hope you really like it and get going on it.
need i say more? I have been in love with Iceland and the Icelanders from the first moment I got there 28 years ago... could it be the dramatic treeless landscape or the courageous people, could it be the clean air or the midnight sun, could it be the hospitality and friendliness, the space... the invention of the artists, the lyricism of the language... I don't know but it rocks me to my romantic soul.
My first trip to Iceland 1981:
I was invited by a friend Þor Elis Pálsson to do a performance at the Living Art Museum in Reykjavik which landed me a job at the art school where I made new friends, friends I still have ... and now it gets complicated... when I was 5 or 6 I was given books with pictures of the second world war.. which hadn't been over that long... now in one of those books was a photograph taken on Reykjavik airfield of an Icelandic pony in front of a Lysander airplane in a brick-built semi-circle parking bay, there was snow on the ground and the blue mountains in the background.
Right. Now in the same year as my performance, winter '81. when I went back for the second time to teach... and I use the expression lightly as mostly we just made mayhem doing things like setting fire to glaciers, taking day trips through snow storms, freaking out at the aurora and testing the acoustics of lakes at night, I was invited to go flying in a Cessna, Þor and me rolled up at the airport and went to meet Arni at the plane, when we got there I immediately saw the Cessna was in the same parking bay as was in that old photograph, the semi-circle bay was the same, the mountains were the same only the airplane had changed and of course the horse had gone.
We had a great flight around the area and I realized that Iceland was part of my life. I go every year and continue to make mayhem although it's a bit more old man mayhem these days.
Hollywood, Rod? I always heard it was Utah or Wyoming. But, wherever it is, I'd love to go at least for a day. As long as there's oxygen.
That same feeling you get from the treeless hills of Ísland, I get from the treeless hills of the island of Limnos. Most people find it strange, including most people who live there, but it sends a charge through me, a continuous transfusion of life-giving energy. Each to his own.
From John Collier's story "Witch's Money": Foiral overtook him at the top of the ridge. He was staring down into the valley like a man thunderstruck.
"My God!" he said to Foiral. "Just look at it!" Foiral looked at it. There was nothing wrong.
I can't say about Limnos as I have never been there (looks Greek to me!) but on Iceland there are drinkable rivers everywhere so I just scoop up a kettle of river and boil it up for tea, Lava filtered water is the most delicious I know. Last summer when out with Helgi and Saevi at the glacier of Solheim doing a bit of aimless gardening, we ate ice that was 3,000 years old, the water of the ice was delicious, the volcanic ash it contained was crunchy. Chantal I have a calander from Canada hanging on my wall here, fine looking country you have there too.
You're right about that Chantal, this planet is georgeous. The US had some magnificent places, my favorites are in the southwest. I voted on the best earth sites for the Grand Canyon.
The roses will do great because you burn them back and the roots go deeper. Plenty of water for the plants as long as the foundation doesn't leak. Here the homes have sump pumps to keep the water away from the foundation.
At this point I celebrate every one. I will just show up at the cafe after I go see an exhibition of Dutch Paintings. So enjoy everyone and save a seat for me.
My very best wishes to my great friend, Judy -- she has been very silent about it, it is only through this group that I learned about it. Let all join hands and pray that Judy, will get what she is wishing for -- lots of hat and horns and cheers on her natal day. A lady with a BIG AND CHEERFUL HEART. LET US GIVE HER A TOAST ANDTHREE CHEERS FOR JUDY!!!
Hi SA I guess turning 62 isn't so bad after all, being roasted a little is fun. Sandra is my new co-worker. She is a painter and knitter. The national gallery just opened a show of Dutch painters and I hope you have seen Pompeii and the Roman Villa. I think it is still there
Where are you? Maybe we can get together on a Sat. or Sun. to celebrate or just go to the museums. I am working this Sunday since I do the rent collections at work and that is the 1st to 6th each month. My address is on the mail art for Ruud site to participate.
OK Chantal, now you all have 2 mailartists from the same area to salute at 62 and counting. Maybe not counting too much. Will celebrate on Cafe Saturday afternoon about 3 or 4 my time Eastern US.
This is for tomorrow, Saturday January 31, so don't lick the icing yet. It is baked by Chantal Laurin from Canada for my party on cafe in the afternoon, byob.
